And this is not prompted by Mingo in walking boot. Why was 68 in the game late? To learn a new position, gain chemistry w/L'aell? Both of those should be secondary to keeping him healthy. How screwed are we if Josh goes down? Hurst w/bum ankle in late, why? Let me guess rantard answer, to get in game shape, duh! Same for defense. T Simon & Reid late in game, why? Again, majorly screwed if Simon goes down. Let the backups play, not w/3 min left, and actually see how a Davenport does at LT when defense isn't completely worn down. What says rant?

Lot's of young guys and Les is using these first few games to see who can do what with the ones. We have quite a few position battles on defense and it was the first time this o-line lineup played together. It's not like Les just left them in to see if they would get hurt.

Saban's attitude about late game injuries used to drive me f*cking mad. In response to any criticism about keeping the starters in, he'd just say "Players can get hurt on any play."

This is true, of course. But it's equally true that from a purely mathematical perspective, if there is an equal chance of injury on any given play, then your aggregate risk of injury increases with the number of snaps you see. Saban just f*cking refused to recognize this basic fact. And that's how Ben Wilkerson's career was needlessly wasted.

So, yes, take the starters out as as soon as practicable in a blowout.

Was at this game and understand exactly where you are coming from. Almost blew that one.

Watching the Alabama game Saturday with my friend who is a huge Tide fan, and he couldn't quit shaking his head as McCarron was sacked on 2 straight plays when up 35-0 late in the 4th. I see things haven't changed.

If you look at the big picture, this game was our chance to make a statement, in case Bama drops a couple of games this year. Our near shut-out of a PAC-12 team will be the only thing that keeps us ahead of USC or Oregon in the event that the rest of the SEC doesn't live up to expectations, weakening our SoS.

It was you calling about the third FB.

If you're worried about injuries that you cannot control, you'll go crazy. Play the game. All 60 minutes.

Then how will we ever get that critical "in-game practice" of the downfield passing game for Mett???

Don't you want your starters to go a full 60 minutes? If we are going to wear teams down and that is our calling card, only 60 minutes will suffice

I think you meant contradiction, not oxymoron. Oxymoron typically applies to a figure of speech. But in any event, there is no contradiction. We could have passed downfield more in the first three quarters, or put another way, passed downfield to score the 41 points rather than relying on the running game to do it. In fact, presumably we would have scored more quikly passing, hence effectuating a blowout earlier, allowing us to take the starters out earlier, thereby accomplishing all aims.

Nice thread hijack, BTW.

I kept hearing it was to let the team continue to keep the pace and cohesion. It's only the 2nd game, they need the feel and reps to get into rhythm for the season.

Don't put words in my mouth. "in-game practice" is an oxymoron not a contradiction.

You didn't contradict yourself, you just want your cake and to eat it too. Kind of like a spoiled kid, but you can't have it both ways.

THIS...Also, add to the fact that we will likely pull our starters this week against Idaho and this game was a good chance for everyone to get some reps together as a unit.
