Alabama was up 4 td's with 7 mins to go and still had most of their starters playing in last weeks game. Most people think Saban is the #1 college coach in the world and he disagrees with the OP as well.

So - after reading this whole damn thread, one thing strikes me as remarkable. There are ranters who actually can argue then make up. Interesting...
I think all of you are right to some degree. I spent 20 years in the USMC and you would THINK that Generals and such know what they are doing better or more than junior personnel or civilians, but the fact is this: they are all human and infallible, and SOMETIMES dont know what the hell is going on, as stated in these posts. The interesting thing is that sometimes I actually DO think coaches brain fart and DONT know what they are doing. There is a lot of information to process during a game and a LOT of people (coaches) in their ear, etc probably telling the head coach that, for example, Mett needs "more reps". Is that the case? Maybe, maybe not, but I do know that 9 out of 10 people wait for others to tell them what to do, most of the time. So - head coaches make stupid decisions at times.
Conversely, they make great decisions as well. Who knows if the 10 extra reps for Mett late in a blowout helps us beat Bama? Sadly, if he gets destroyed on a blind blitz the coach DOES look silly leaving him in. Its a catch 22.
Oddly enough, I am inclined to trust all of the coaches, though as stated, some (like Saban) believe in the "every down" odds vice the zero odds of being on the bench.
Semper

First half of the season? Hell no, it's smart. Latter part of the season, rest them up.

I somewhat agree with that Roger. I'm not accusing Miles of keeping players in when they shouldn't. I'm sure he's done it, but I can't recall any starters being injured during "garbage time". Maybe it's happened, but I don't recall. Saban seems to have a long history of doing it, and I think it's stupid. It's bit him in the arse before, as others have pointed out, and it will undoubtably happen again.
Can you imagine the meltdown the Gumps would have had if McCarron would have sustained a season ending injury in the fourth quarter up 35-0 against Western Kentucky?
