Yes, I wasn't joking, there really are Ice Dragons. Also te rest of the world apparently also had the long night and others, cotf etc... Blood sacrifice is required to work valyrian steel. Lots of interesting stuff that had been hinted at but never directly stated.

I'm thumbing through it and the illustrations are beautiful. It's largely Targaryen based from what I can tell.

The scene where Rhaegar gives Lyanna the blue roses.

The death of Meraxes

I don't really know what people were expecting when they say it's underwhelming. Its got a lot of info in it regarding the history of Westeros but I'm sure if you've read the wikis then it's not all new. Just grazing it looks like they covered quite a bit.
