Homebrew question: Airlock
Posted on 6/3/12 at 9:29 pm

So my beer is fermenting like crazy. So much so the airlock isn't full of just water but is brown from foam coming up through it, and there is some coming out and down the sides of the carboy
Did I overfill the carboy? Is this normal? Should I change the water in the airlock?

You're going to need to rig up a blow-off tube now - Like right now. You will be mopping your ceiling otherwise.

You did something right. Gotta love that. Rig that airlock.

Well that didn't work
What caused this mess?

Blow off tube, stat.
I usually always start with a blowoff tube the first 3 days then switch back to airlock.

Them bastards need to chill a bit
I have no way to rig a tube for a blow off and after the calamity of trying to rig one, I'm just hoping for the best

Just get a short segment of 3/4 inch tube and jam it on over the tube in your airlock.

We are going to need updates on how this "hope for the best" approach worked out for you. I've personally seen my brew partner's ceiling absolutely coated with beer and a nice beer puddle all around the carboy. It's an unholy mess. Set up the blowoff tube.
Also, the carboy and airlock seem to know when the airlock letting go will cause the maximum distress. It is a loud and sharp sound and tends to like to go off in the wee hours of the morning when you're deep asleep.

Perhaps I should have explained more with my "that didn't work" post
I made it while my wife was cleaning the ceiling in the closet
While trying to fit the tube on some sort of way, I ended up letting it blow out. Moved it to the tub, rinsed the airlock and reinstalled it
It is currently bubbling away again, though now slower. I hold out little hope for this batch

Don't worry. It happens to me a lot. Like the other guy said usually in the early morning. What kind of beer did you brew and how did the rest of the process go?

While messy, this is a good thing. Yeast are going crazy. And with this amount of fermentation at the moment, the chance that it got infected during this mess is incredibly small. You are fine and this has happened to every single homebrewer at least once.

I brewed the Austin Homebrew American Brown Ale recipe, and it went very, very well.
Too easy, as it turns out

well, they were. It's calmed down quite a bit this morning

I assumed with everything coming out, nothing was going in

I figured, but it's my nature to stress over things like this. It's why I drink

If it makes you feel any better, I had this happen to me mid-boil yesterday evening.
Somehow burned a hole in a stainless steel brewpot... which then shorted out my range... sparks, an explosion, and wort everywhere.

Holy hell.... damn dude. Gotta take that outside.
That's crazy and I'm sure it was a hot sticky mess. The range is probably toast too huh?

The HELL?!? That is nuts.

I've used that pot for many brews and never had an issue... it was definitely a mess but we got to it quickly and most of the wort drained into the sink and not the range.
Only one burner/connection is fried and will need to be re-wired, the rest was still working. Debating whether to fix it or just buy a new range.

I think it was something wrong with the burner that caused a hot spot... it basically welded the burner to the bottom of the pot and then burned through.
