Yahoo Sports: NBA league executives believe the lottery was rigged

This was the fitting end to one of the darkest, most unseemly episodes in the history of the NBA, the perfect punctuation on the commissioner's manipulation of the sale and salvation of a lost franchise.
The New Orleans Hornets won the draft lottery and get to pick one of the most transcendent prospects in years, Kentucky's Anthony Davis. The NBA-owned New Orleans Hornets, with a 13.7 percent chance, won the lottery. For over a year, David Stern pushed hard to get maximum value for his owners on the re-sale of the Hornets, and Tom Benson gave Stern an asking price and an assurance the franchise wouldn't leave New Orleans.
"It's such a joke that the league made the new owners be at the lottery for the show," one high-ranking team executive told Yahoo! Sports. "The league still owns the Hornets. Ask their front office if new owners can make a trade right now. They can't. This is a joke."
The reaction of several league executives was part disgust, part resignation on Wednesday night. So many had predicted this happening, so many suspected that somehow, someway, the Hornets would walk away with Davis. That's the worst part for the NBA; these aren't the railings from the guy sitting at the corner tavern, but the belief of those working within the machinery that something undue happened here, that they suspect it happens all the time under Stern.

Only 2 teams had better odds to win the lottery than the Hornets. I'm failing to see why it's so unbelievable and corrupted.

If they don't like it, they can go back to the old method. Then they can bitch about teams tanking the season to get the #1 pick.

This was a Woj butthurt story.
No one ACTUALLY believes this stuff, especially not people who have witnessed the actual lottery.
All teams use the same 14 ping pong balls. It is completely and utterly impossible to rig.

Stern's definitely ready to do hard prison time to get Anthony Davis to New Orleans.
I appreciate it though. I'll write to him when he's in there.

Just not sure how this could be rigged with the system they have in place and the fact that there were reps from every team present. This would have to be some big time collusion for the Lottery to be rigged.

Whats amazing is that there is a conspiracy and not one person involved - present or past - has slipped up or leaked any concrete evidence to the media. Not one shred of concrete evidence.

What a shitty arse story. No proof or anything, then he uses a quote that has nothing to do with the lottery being rigged and everything to do with the power of the new owners. Basically anybody could've written this with no attribution.

People don't understand probabilities, not sure why people are screaming foul play. Although it's fun watching the Hornets fans getting pissed at the conspiracy theorist; I mean even if it's rigged why do you care you got the #1 pick and that won't change.

How is this even a complaint? And how would it point to any lottery rigging?
"Oh my God, the new owners can't make a trade, and are present like most other owners...rigged"

The NBA look more like the WWE every year....sad really.
They keep trying to "create" the dynamic they had when Jordan was in the league, but it can't be created. Great players and great competition make that happen....not a hand of god approach.

What is so unbelievable that a team with a roughly 1/9 chance won over a team with a 1/4?
Or to round up and down to make it easier, 1/10 over a 2.5/10?

I guess if you send a little kid in hipster glasses and a bow tie to the lottery nobody cares if you get the first pick.
Was Woj outraged when the Cavs won the lotto last year after losing Lebron? Or that the Cavs got Lebron in the first place?
Or when the Bulls were a borderline playoff team and won the lottery with a 1% chance and drafted Rose who happened to be from Chicago.
