Thinking about getting one. How are they with small kids? Are they as energetic as a lab?

Worked at a house once where the people had some registered trophy winning ones.
Good looking mutts

Google should tell you if they are good with children...

My professional opinion is to go with the doberman if those are your only two choices. The Weimaraner is still a good dog but tends to be a little hard-head, compared to the doberman, and inbreeding in the past decade has to led to many neurotic dogs. It's still a good dog if you buy the right one.

Had one for ten years...

He was very large compared to a typical Weimaraner, weighing in at 145 lbs, and he thought he was a lap dog. Most Weimaraners weight around 80-90 lbs.

My neighbors have one around 80 lbs (female) and they have kids ranging from 3 - 10 y/o and they've had no issues.

Be ready to exersize them, they need to walk/run frequently....

My neighbor across the street has one. He also has a 2-3 year old son. Dog is great around him, real good, sweet dog and very, very loyal and obedient.

Great with my son. They never get tired and they must be part of the family- can't be isolated. Extremely smart, but they are needy. Good luck!

More energy than a lab! Ive had two. My female just passed. My male is older than she was (11yo) and is still energetic. Great with kids and very loyal. Just make sure you get one from a good breeder.

Very smart, great with kids, but my gosh do they have some energy! If properly trained they are great hunting companions, too. You'll need to make sure it gets plenty of exercise. More gentle/kid friendly than a Doberman, IMO.

My family has one....I bought one for my boyfriend at the time about 7 years ago from a breeder in Tennessee and my Mom told me to go ahead and pick up one of the littermates for my younger brother. Every time I go home the running joke is for me to take him back to Tennessee.

He's not a good dog but he is family now. A lot of his bad behavior is probably from the lack of training he failed to receive when he was a puppy from my brother....

He is SOOOO hyper and will eat just about anything. The dog destroyed a couple of pecan pies one Thanksgiving and tried to get into the pecan praline King Cake I brought home from NOLA.

He's a really good looking dog though and has been great around my three nieces. He just loves attention and loves to play. Make sure you have enough time (and patience) for the family to give him a lot of outdoor play time to help with the hyperactivity of the breed.

Here are a few pics of him:

Smartest dog I've ever had, and I've had some pretty smart ones, including a German Shepherd from champion working lines.

And he is my daughter's best friend. I have no worries when she's outside and he's with her. Nobody is going to bother her.

Weims are going to need more exercise that a dobe. The dobe is going to want to be everywhere you are. If you plan on keeping the dog outside, I would suggest staying away from the doberman, it will be miserable.

ETA: You can even get one that looks like a weim, but I would not suggest you do so.

I have a weimaraner. She's about 8 yrs old now. Had her before we had the kids. Kids came along and she is wonderful with them. My son is 6 and girl is 3. She lets them walk her around, yank on her ears when they were babies, etc. Very patient and a great little mother hen!

Very smart, loyal, and energetic dog. Mine seems to have lonliness issues... can't stand to be alone. Always wants to be at someones side. We let her inside and out.

I was working with her to duck hunt the rice fields with me, but then baby boy came along and I didn't have time to work with her. But very capable hunting dog too. She was up to marking 3 dummies and retrieving before we stopped.

I highly recommend this breed! But be prepared to excersice her daily ALOT. Luckily I live on a quiet street, and I would get on my bike at full speed and she'd be running along like it was nothing. She's lost a step now though finally after 8 years.
