NOAA Fisheries Service needs to make sure gray triggerfish quotas are not exceeded within the year. There is already a quota closure for the commercial sector, so no additional measures are needed. However, there is no in-season closure for the recreational sector. This temporary rule includes a provision to close the recreational sector if it catches its quota.

and what's the science this is based on? No one i know even catches triggers recreationally.

We do, but it's not a target fish. I love the meat, but their mouth makes them tough to hook. Any suggestions?

I really don't care to spearfish, though. Been there, done that. I prefer taking it easy on dives, honestly.

I've fished offshore once in my life. We fished mainly for snapper, but we caught an assload of trigger fish too. We were reeling them up two at a time sometimes. Didn't seem to have any trouble hooking them. But, I am an awesome fisherman.

There's your problem. There is no science. There is a lack of bottom fish in florida therefore the apply the same stupid rules for the entire gulf.

And I know plenty of people that catch them. Size 2 hooks with squid is money

Its the law, YES. Anytime you are fishing around a rig now, you have to use circle hooks.

I think it's a good rule for the future of the fishery but don't see everyone doing it. As far as catching them goes just jump in at the rig with a speargun and snorkel. You can shoot them all day and kill your limit of mangroves in the process. Good luck trying to catch those bastards with a circle hook.

i have yet to have a game warden approach my boat at a rig in federal waters and check to see if i am using circle hooks. heck they check me coming in and just check my fish, licenses, and boat safety equipment. never asked about circle hooks or venting device.

This is more legit than the snapper stuff. CCA has info out that the increase in the snapper is hurting the trigger fish. The trigger fish spawn like bass and protect their eggs. The snapper are hurting their populations because they feed on their eggs. It was in some research video dealing with artificial reefs and such.

Trigger fish was never a big commercial fish. Back in the days, if we had 100-200lbs off of a boat catching 5,000+lbs that was a lot. They just didn't catch a lot of them.

Evenutally the government is going to take away just about all fish it seems.

Isn't this just darwinism? I don't understand what's wrong with letting snapper eat trigger fish eggs or why fishing should change because of it.
