Every year we go camping after the kids get out of school. We went to Degray Lake in Arkansas last summer. We are looking for a place to go this year on a lake or river that is no more than 7 hours away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bruge, Belgium. It's not more than 7 hours away from Hazebrouck, France.

Seven hours from where, man?

Check out Louisiana state parks website. There is some nice cabins to be rented. Just find a place that's got the amenities you want.

Sorry - 7 hours from Baton Rouge. We go tent camping and have been camping in California the past 10 years - just moved to BTR

WELL, I don't want to give away my secret plans, but we're going camping on St. George Island in FL next month. I think that's probably within 7 hours of Baton Rouge.

I know it's in Wiggins, MS.

I know it's not a creek. And it has, or at least used to have nice hiking trails.

Good one. Love camping at the state park there, it's proly a bit over 7 hours from BR but is worth any extra time driving. Beautiful beaches and dunes.

It's a shame you stopped at DeGray because for another one hour drive you could be up in the Ouachita Mountains. Go up past Albert Pike and just find a spot on the river. Or over on the Cossatot area. Or around Shady lake. Beautiful, real live mountains that broke off from the Appalachians a gazillion years ago. Cold mountain clear water streams. Cooler weather than lower.

Way better than Degray.

Don't send him to Cossatot, It's raining alot this weekend. Went by there after the flood that was just awful. They have done well to restore the area. Yes Cossatot is much nicer than DeGray.

Shady Lake is a great camping spot. Many of the spots are large enough to where you can't really see the person next to you. Has some good hiking, little swimming and it isn't far from little Mo. falls and ALbert Pike.

There you go, should have read a bit more I guess. Shady Lake was one of y favorite spots in Arkansas and it isn't very far from the La border. Greeson would be another suggestion but it doesn't quite have the appeal of Shady Lake IMO

Did you hear about the bear attack at Shady Lake a few years ago?

Does Ark. have a sizable population of black bears? More than La I guess

Well they've got a hunting season for them so they must have plenty. I've seen both bears and a cougar in the Ouachita Mountains over the years. Damn cougar came up within fifty yards of our camp and let loose a scream that was the most terrifying sound I've ever heard.
