My neighbor told me that while fishing offshore in Cocodrie him and his friends saw a water spout about 2 miles away. What would cause this and has anyone else seen any?

here is one from when i was working offshore near biloxi (Cat Island). i think it is caused by special circumstances from a low pressure zone. the pics kinda suck, but you could easily see the water being churned up where the spout was touching down

you also might want to edit your title, they tend to anchor two worded titles (not sure about the OB though)

I was working on a Dredging project by Breton Island. The weather change and the wind pick up. Out of nowhere a water spout touch down and went across the bow of the dredge.
No damage to the dredge but, it left a bunch of fish on the deck.

I used to fish out there and have probably seen 10 or 15 through the years...they seem to be very common....pretty damn scary when you are around one, though...
there is apparently some belief by the old timers that you are not supposed to look at them or some bad luck will come upon you....I say look at them as you haul arse....

Long story short... Fishing coon point a few years ago and there were storms to the west and north. Decided to head for the marsh and the storms merged together right after we got to sister lake. Looked back towards caillou bay and there were 3 water spouts where we had passed 5 min earlier.
I am much more worried about lightning than water spouts. I hate lightning when on a boat.

The only time I ever thought I was going to die was during a lightning storm while hauling arse down the spoil canal towards Breton Sound marina. Never want to go through that again

I see them pretty often working out with the crew a few times. We're offshore a lot, and that seems to be where the majority of them are. Although, I've seen one or two pick up in Lake Pontchartrain before.

I've never seen one, is it like a mini tornado on water?
Don't want to get to close to one

Imagine that sob popping up 5 feet from your boat

exactly what it is... we saw 3 when we were racing, but they were small ones... scary because we knew they could turn into something bigger

One day we were fishing In a bad arse winter storm in big lake and there were 3 of them.
We see them all the time in the summer offshore. One came and lifted right before the platform and sat down on the other side of us

I used to run right thru them offshore just to wash down the boat. They are really not that bad out there compared to inshore ones. Kind of hard to lift over a 10,000 lb boat.
