Who was the more dominating coach in their respective sport?

Fun fact: Coach Wooden once got a hole-in-one on hole number 6, and then shot an albatross, double eagle, on the 16th hole, one of only 4 golfers in history to ever do that (recorded)....(and not Kim Jong Il).

Well, yeah. Kim Jong Il never shot an albatross.

Wooden won once with a small team.

After that, all his championships depended on having THE dominant CENTER in the game attending UCLA for 4 years, 3 of which Lew Alcindor played varsity, Bill Walton played 3 years varsity, and the other championships were Wicks/Rowe years.

Bryant won with different guys/teams at Bama but similarly to having Walton and Alcindor had Stabler and Namath.

I give the edge to Bear, barely.

Easy Wooden
My top 5 list would go like this
Wooden
Phil Jackson
Coach K.
Vince Lombardi
Bear
I have seen 4 top coaches of all time, and wooden is #1 in every one of them.
I would put him at number #2 on most bad arse coach of all time behind Bobby Knight.

You can't say that wooden had an advantage without saying that bear had the same advantage.

Twice.

This is stupid. How many titles did Bear win - almost half of Wooden?

Dominating a segregated SEC isn't something to hang your hat on as the greatest...he won some of his titles playing against ALL-WHITE teams...His years worth counting are '72 to '80 to be fair and accurate historically. John McKay won 4 national titles and he played anyone, anywhere.

No one has dominated their sport like Wooden did - people just like to come around and knock him because it's hard to find holes in 10 championships. Plus it's an anti-UCLA thing.

We also have to go with the time frame and the state of college football and basketball at the time. You could argue that Coach Bryant coached in a stronger league at the time, as some consider the 60's and 70's the golden era of a lot of teams such as, Texas, OU, Arkansas, USC, UCLA, Michigan, Ohio State, etc... In the 60's and 70's in college basketball you had, UCLA (Obviously), Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, and then it starts to get harder to name some teams. Also, some would argue the 70's were a substantially harder era with the addition of nation wide integration in pretty much every college, where as college basketball had integration a little bit sooner which made the league more credible.

I would think that College Basketball would have been a bigger sport in the 70's than it is today, also I would say that you can't argue had better talent, played in a stronger league, etc. About one with out arguing it about the other.
You know what Wooden won for ten straight years in a sport that is hard to win for 1 year? A playoff, how many playoff victories does bryant have?

Ok, if this thread is silly, which coach is comparable to Coach Wooden? Any coach in any college sport? Coach McDonnell at Arkansas? Or pro? Coach Auerbach? Or is Coach Wooden just not comparable to and is the greatest coach in the history of modern American sports?

So, not even the 42 National Championships at Arkansas by Coach McDonnell is comparable? Or the 8 in a row and 9 out 10 by Coach Auerbach can compare? I will give you that the NBA wasn't a powerhouse league in the late 50's and 60's, but it was still impressive.

Nope, remember Wooden was also one of the greatest teachers and humanitarians ever. Wasnt Auerbach the guy that wouldn't recruit black players?

while im not arguing about who's better, you need a history lesson. Bear did play integrated teams, including penn state, nebrasa and oklahoma.

And funny you should start at 72, when in 71 bear went TO the west coast and beat mckay's integrated
trojans.
