After getting actual heights and 40 times (electronically in ideal, consistent conditions), what adjustment do we make to the "listed" football recruits' measurables?

At first glance I go with the following:
Height - subtract 1 inch for everyone and another 0.5" - 1" for all WRs and QBs 6' 2" and shorter
40 time - add 0.15 seconds for all non linemen

Yeah, that's pretty much what I do.

I assume every recruit is at least an inch shorter than listed.

Don't adjust anything. Since every recruits numbers are skewed, they are a fairly accurate gauge. They may not be legit, but if recruits aren't legit, then it really doesn't matter.

I don't think it is position specific, people as a whole exaggerate, about their height, forty time, fish that got away, etc. I also think most height listings are with shoes/cleats on. Combines almost always measure you barefoot, and they compress/push down on your head with your feet flat. That is why you see guys like Mo Claiborne measure in at 5'11'. You will see atleast an inch difference depending on the shoe.

As for the forty, I beleive the NFL combines are a combo of electronic and hand. Laser times can be 0.2-0.3 slower than hand times. Surface also is a factor. Do not assume that all turf surfaces lead to fast forty times. Some tracks are faster than others.

I like what our coaches do. They get their own data and go from there. Too hard to compare other forty times. The surface, weather, shoe, measurement tools, methods of measurement, conditions etc. lead to many differences.

By this point, I am almost convinced that the recruiting sites just assign fabricated 40 times in the free profiles. 5-star? 4.40. Top 100? 4.45. 4-star in the top 250? 4.50. You went to a bad high school so we never saw you play? 4.65.

When was the last time you saw someone who ran a 4.46 or a 4.62? They are almost always 4.40, 4.55, etc. Now I know they have their own combines, but they never put those scores up in the profiles. Why? Because the 40 times are always super slow. And that makes sense. Most of the guys at the NFL combine have done nothing but prepare for these drills the last 2 months. You think high school kids are doing that ?

Fwiw, Chris Owusu, who ran a 4.31 yesterday at the NFL combine was listed as a 4.50 guy in high school, so they don't always knock guys' scores up (especially if they aren't top 100 recruits).

I always wanted to see what I ran in the forty. But like you guys said, if you can't happen to stumble across a way to not hand time it.... You're s.o.o.l.

You can't compare the measurables of recruits to juniors and seniors at the combine. They are three years older and have been through a college S&C program.

But, recruiting measurables are bullshite. But the coaches get them in camps, so they know.

Maybe some grow an inch or two taller in college, but then the colleges still bump them up the extra inch or two (cleats and hair?).

As one poster mentioned, it is generally a relative scale - so a guy listed as 4.4 40 high school senior is probably faster than a 4.5 40 senior. But they will inevitably lose .10 or .15 off their 40 time at the combine with electronic timing - lots of hype in those numbers!

But if the 4.4 guy runs a 4.5 and the 4.5 guy runs a 4.6, it's all relative.

Same with the sizes.

Also, most players are measured in shoes, because it's done at camps or tournaments (for basketball) and they aren't taking their shoes off for that. Then at the combines, they measure them barefooted, so it's always going to be and inch or two shorter.

I'm with you, it's all relative. The other posters made good points as well. 40 times are just for bragging rights. At the combine most of the best 40 times are ran by kids that aren't going before the middle rounds in the draft. The speed on the field in pads is all that's important.
