re: Paging Will Cover: I'm in the market for a new car

Bump.

More than likely my transmission has bit the dust. The truck is worth $5k in good condition but I'll be lucky to get $3k with a shot transmission. You said to not have your trade-in and new purchase based on each other, but I'm kind of at the dealer's mercy on that one. If not, I'd like to know how to handle this one.

TIA

very true. and that is when they will doctor the contract and documents where you will not notice it until it is too late among other things. Price Leblanc is the one of the best at wearing customers down and then screwing them.

Do you have another dealer within a 50 mile radius that you can deal with and doesn't know you have a vehicle that you're possibly looking to trade in?

I recently wore them down, to the point they were willing to let me walk away from the deal. This was after working with them and others for almost 2 months. And this was on the 2nd to last day of the month too.

Ended up getting the deal we wanted, plus several free oil changes and I am in the process of receiving a $500 VISA gift card from Edmunds to boot.

I leased from them back in 2000. never again. i only buy now and i pay outright after a few notes of financing.i doubt i even buy new ever again. only if it is a killer deal. i enjoy having no long term notes.

There are plenty of dealers in the area, but I'm not going to fix my truck if its a full transmission job. It's basically stuck at the Ford dealership at their mercy

The get up and leave tactic is one of the best. I went to another dealership who had a better price on the same car but the paint color was different and the first caved in.

Any advice when dealing with Brian Harris Audi in Baton Rouge. I'm looking at an A6, but they don't have too many, so I figure they are going to look to make as much as possible on what they got.

My mother in law supposedly has the ability to get invoice pricing on Chevy vehicles. She says she gets some code from work and the dealer has to honor the invoice pricing plus all current rebates and discounts being offered. If all this is true, would I even have any negotiating to do? Or do show up and buy the car?

A friend of mine gets invoice pricing as well, his brother works at the ford plant in Michigan.

He gets the code, goes in and negotiates a decent deal, then at the end of it says "oh btw I have this code..."

The salesman usually gets mad bc it was a total waste of time for him.

How much off MSRP do you estimate I should be expecting to be taken off with the invoice pricing?

Did you ever watch that 2001 movie Suckers?

I once watched it on a movie channel ages ago, and though it was one of the most hilarious things I had ever seen, but almost nobody that I know has ever heard of it.

It was pretty low budget, but there were some great scenes, like this one: " How to Negotiate a Car Vehicle Purchase Warning Language!."

And this one: LINK.

Email dealers in other big cities and see if they can't give you a better price. Then show it to your local dealer. I saved. $1000 on a car by buying in Shreveport vs N. O.

Sold cars for a few years (though used). Will Cover's advice was money but you can simplify it down even further if you're worried about your memory and/or negotiating skills.

quote:

8. Know what power you possess by being able to “walk away.”

Only one you really need to know. Figure out a number you want to pay and stick to it. No need to start low and increase. No need to be silent. Etc. They'll either get there or they won't. It's not rocket science. They can't get you the car at that price (assuming it's reasonable)? Someone else can. Sticking to this tactic also allows you to do whatever the hell you want during the test drive. I loved it when people would pick apart a car during their test drive because they thought I would think they didn't like it

- Always talk cost in terms of OTD price
Don't let the 4 square make your head spin. Because it can. Any good salesman or the desk can trick stupid people into thinking they are getting a good deal by playing with numbers on that sheet. Don't get hung up on interest %, monthly payments, trade in value. Which brings me to my last important tip

-get financing squared away prior to going to the dealership

I stopped at Brian Harris Porsche earlier this month looking for a used car and it was a miserable experience. The selection was limited and there was no interest negotiating prices for what was on the lot, the best they would offer was a third party warranty. They are also pretty unresponsive with inquiries as well. Honestly, I'll drive to New Orleans for the scheduled maintenance just to avoid Brian Harris.

It's a huge headache, but all the out of state dealers I contacted were far more motivated, and prices in Houston are significantly better than Louisiana or Alabama.

re: Paging Will Cover: I'm in the market for a new car

I got hit with all the tricks listed today. I left for Mobile at 7am, looked at the car, drove it and intended to buy it. I sat there for an hour just waiting for paperwork back and forth. Finally around 1230 I said I was going to lunch and I'd come back when they had all the paperwork in order.

Basically, the advertised price was 29,999, they took a $1,000 off to get me to test drive it, and then I had a USAA coupon for an additional $700 off the final negotiated price. In the end we agreed to $28,300 for the car and they would include an extended warranty. I put down a $5k downpayment on my credit card and went to lunch.

I came back at 1:30 and they sent me off to the finance guy...which I thought was odd because, I already informed them I was financed. I found it even stranger that he began talking numbers in "monthly payments." When he presented the purchase contract, the numbers seemed off, so I pulled out my iphone calculator, and notified the dealer that he forgot to factor in the downpayment. He went through the numbers and said I forgot to factor the cost of warranty. When I referred back to the paperwork, and explained all the details were previously confirmed with the salesman, and the warranty was included without charge. At that point they brought the whole team in, and said the salesman misunderstood the manager, etc....they then said I must have known they made a mistake because the warranty cost $3,400, and I was trying to take advantage of an obvious mistake. When that was unsuccessful, they dropped the "let's take $500 off the warranty, and call it even." The last resort was "Are you really going to drive six hours for nothing?" Needless to say, I had them refund my credit card, and I'll take my chances in Houston.

I thought of MT while they gave me some time to think about my options, and took this pic. Am I the only one that thinks this paperwork is deceptive?

Will Cover we met a few years ago in the Albertsons highland/airline hwy parking lot - I had a Infiniti g35 that I was looking to sale and you were interested. I recently purchased a used 09 Chevy z71 4x4 and wanted to thank you for your car buying advice.

Will Cover-

Since this has become sort of the Will Cover thread I have a quick question for you: I saw in another thread you ended up buying a new pathfinder recently... Would you mind sharing the details of the transaction? (Trim level, price etc). We're gonna shop those soon and I'd love to have an end result goal to shoot for! That and perhaps a reputable dealer to start with. Thanks
