me and my club from Memphis are thinking about going down to Grand Isle to do a little fly fishing from our kayaks - anyoen as any suggestions as to what time of the year and where to launch from are best?

If you want to fish in the surf, go in the summer, but the marshes provide great, smooth water for kayaks and there's nothing like sight-casting to tailing reds. IMO the shallow water fly-fishing is best from March to around May, before the vegetation begins to grow.

Give Captain Danny Wray a call in Grand Isle, or ask the guys at BCKFC.org. Y'all ought to consider making one of the BCKFC tournaments, like Paddle Palooza.

This! Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club. The paid portion of the site has a fly fishing section but the free part has a lot of good info as well.

actually, looks like the fly fishing part is on the free section.

ETA: my bad, wife was talking about bayou country superfest earlier.

I'm betting it's Midsouth fly fishers. I might have that name slight wrong but I've been a member and taught a rod building class.

8 weight is a bit heavy for inshore specs and reds-too tough to cast all day. A 7 wt rod uploaded with 8 wt line is good for reds and a 5 wt rod uploaded with 6 wt line is good for specs. I always upload my rods with heavier-rated lines for better distance casting.
