Kevin Sumlin-UH coach that is a hot commodity though his flub against Southern Miss cooled him a bit. Former OC for Stoops at OU and at A&M under RC (was well thought of).

Charlie Strong-Louisville coach that was Meyer's DC at Florida. Heavy SEC ties and has done a solid job turning around a disaster at Louisville. Also was a GA at A&M in the '80s.

Kirby Smart-Alabama DC under Saban. Very young and obviously well thought of but the record for Saban assistants is mixed. Also has no ties to Texas but is considered a strong recruiter.

Larry Fedora-Southern Miss coach that was OC under Zook at Florida. Considered a strong recruiter and has strong SEC and Texas ties (actually grew up in CS). Good chance he may get Zook to come along as a DC since he was let go at Illinois.

Aggie nation is very divided and interviews are going on. Who would you hire? Who would you NOT hire?

as a hog fan I want you guys to get Sumlin. I don't want you guys to develop any sense of a defense.

Fedora would be my vote if I was an tamu fan.

I'm hoping UT gets Sumlin or Strong, provided that their next season doesn't do something to change my mind about them.

Clearly the top candidate is Kirby Smart for them. He would recruit well enough because of his "Saban" ties.

He also would have A&M a solid D and they already run a 3-4, so no real transition if they hired a 4-3 coach.

Plus, Sumlin is not a good coach. HAs never beaten anyone worth a damn like BOise has, and he had a losing record without Keenum. He may be good, but no reason for A&M to take a chance on him.

Strong is good too, I just think Kirby Smart is a better hire at this point due to Strong playing a different style of D.

Fedora is decent, but Zook at DC makes me shudder.

Houston Dale Nutt.

Sorry couldn't help myself. Honestly think that Smart would be the best hire for the Aggies right now.

Fedora with Zook as his DC would be the start of a really solid coaching staff. Zook, for all of his faults, has always been a great recruiter.

I'd be the most skeptical about Smart if UT was considering those guys. He could be great, but I' not willing to roll the dice on another guy just because he works for Saban. Also, I want someone with Head Coaching experience.

What does that have to do with Smart?

I agree. My top three for next year (up and coming coaches) would be Mike London, Charlie Strong, then Kevin Sumlin.

Fedora talks out of the side of his mouth. I'd tell him to gtfo if he came in my living room recruiting.

If they got Fedora and he managed to bring the Zooker along they could be a great recruiting tandem. Probably the best move for A&M. Houston coach is not a good defensive coach, which is what they need for elite success in the SEC. The other two are unproven.

Unrelated note: wouldn't it be great to have Strong and Smart on your coaching staff if only just for the names?

Why?

He has done well at USM, but didn't Bower really set them up and do just about as good before him?

Plus, Fedora has inexplicable losses at times to the likes of teams like UAB and MArshall.

I'd rather go with a guy who has been on the big stage.

The only answer here is either Smart or Strong. And without hearing an interview, there is no real separation IMO between them.
