For years I have parked off of Alaska Street without any issue and without having to pay a dime. However, when I tried to park in that area on Saturday, there was a "locals" from the neighborhood in every vacant lot, side of the road, etc., attempting to charge for parking. I parked in one spot that had no markings at all indicating that I had to pay, but I then see this guy going around asking people for $15. I began walking off and his female assistant grabbed me and asked if I had paid. I told her that I didn't see anything indicating it was private property. She had little response other than telling me I had to pay. I was pretty sure that they had no right charging people to park there so I left the spot and moved to another location that was free. Don't think they could have me towed, but I didn't trust them not to do something to my car. I can't help but think that the locals are now trying to take advantage of people parking in that area.

That $15 is to ensure you don't have any punctured tires or broken windows when you get back.

yea, those are all just rentals around there, so i highly doubt anyone asking for money actually owns the lots they are charging for. Just a bunch of poors that are trying to make money.

I had this happen to me once, we told them to eff off and walked to the game, well about halfway there before we decided we'd rather move the truck than have to deal with slashed tires and broken windows

BRPD should make a stronger presence in those areas during games. I choose to park north of campus bc its easier to get out after the game. I never park on the grass though, only on the curb after I'm certain I'm not blocking a driveway. I've had a "local" stop me a few times and tell me to pay and I always politely say I'd be happy to once he shows me the property is his (which I know he won't/can't). Both times they have backed off.

That scam used to go on for days at Atlanta's old Fulton County Stadium

One time I parked on one of those streets and when someone started walking up to me to make me pay, I just started walking towards the front door of the house I parked in front of and fumbled with my keys for a second. I assume they thought I lived there so they left me alone, so I'm guessing they don't live in the neighborhood, or at least on that street.

Not sure why you'd want to park in that area anyway... It's pretty sketchy.

Hands down the easiest way off campus for me after the game...definitely a cakewalk compared to the traffic south of campus.

On my way to the stadium, i saw a woman holding up a sign, parking $10. Shenoticed i was looking at her and promptly turned the sign around so that it saidparking $15.

+1. And it really isn't that sketchy when the PMAC, Kirby Smith, etc. are visible. I wouldn't go parking on a lot of the side streets though.

The concept of free parking will no longer exist in 3 - 5yrs... I fully expect a charge for Kirby smith and no parking signs on roosevelt in the coming years

They cannot take away your right to park on the street - they do not own the street; however, do not attempt to park in their yard or driveways

$15 is not a bad deal for that location considering your life could be at stake as well as criminal damage to your vehicle

Look at this way - your supporting the drug trade in BR and there protecting your car from ending up repainted and sold

Not saying you are in the wrong necessarily; if you get them to back off, more power to you...but bona fide residential renters have every right to charge you to park on their property or have you towed, assuming it isn't barred by their lease agreement.

Yes LSU gameday parking has turned into 1980's gameday parking around Legion Field in Birmingham.

I grew up in BHAM as an LSU fan.

LSU has created a blackmarket parking situation.....nothing racist there. :)

BRPD is too busy preventing people from parking in all those empty spots on campus.

LSU has turned a once thrilling and scenic gameday drive into campus along Dalrymple Drive into a clusterfricked traffic jam routed through some of the ugliest and nastiest neighborhoods in Baton Rouge along State, Alaska, and Roosevelt streets.

I used to love bringing guests, especially first-timers, into campus for LSU games. Now I'm embarrassed and unsafe. fricking ridiculous and it sucks.

My family has parked off the North side of campus for over 20 years, however in the past 6-8 years locals have been staking claim to various empty lots. Even the curb across the street from some apartment on Alaska has been taken over. My dad has always haggled with them, but what can you ultimately do?
