LSU didn't offer me a football scholarship.

This was years ago. I got to go to a few games as a recruit before Sam Nader told me that they wouldn't offer, but that I could walk on using TOPSnand whatever academic scholarships I had. Cool story, I know. I went elsewhere.
Anyway, in recent years, has any walk-on made any real contribution on the field? Not kickers, real players.

Was he on any academic scholly, or did he pay his own way?

I think that the last year he got a scholly ... but in 2009 he WAS the guy who ran into the Bama kicker. UGH.

I'm not trying to give the dude a hard time ... he WAS good. But that play in 09 along with the "out of bounds" when it wasn't as evidenced by "the divet" was bad ... and I'm a girl and should NOT remember this shite!

If you play football, you can't be on any scholarship but a football scholarship. If you walk on, you cannot get any academic aid, i.e., you can't get an academic scholarship, a TOPS scholarship, a Parrish scholarship, etc. If you get any type of scholarship or aid, you count towards the 85 football scholarships limit. The same rules apply for basketball, but baseball is different.

I am surprised more in-state guys with the grades/ ACT score don't "save the team a scholarship" by being recruited walk-ons. I guess there aren't many who could do it, though.

No shite? Nader told me I could save the team a scholarship. Wtf is a fireman's scholarship?

No TOPS??? THAT is insane. NO other scholly at ALL??? Again, insane.

For those who dont already know, Verge Ausberry was a walk-on who earned a scholly and wound up making HM All-SEC.
I can think of a few damn good players who earned schollies. Reginald Walker and Jay Egloff come to mind.
And, no, walk-on kickers dont count.....seriously.

Kevin Steltz, Craig's older brother, was a walk-on and started some games at fullback. Played on the 2003 national championship team.

Can't even be on a fireman's scholarship. You can't save a football scholarship by using another type of scholarship. Can only do that in baseball.
Again, if you are on any type of aid and you play football, you count. Another example, if you play baseball and football and you are on scholarship (even if a baseball scholarship), you count towards the football scholarship. This actually helps the baseball team because it has so few full scholarships. Also, all football scholarships are full scholarship - no partial scholarships allowed.
