Does anyone know a good American version? I developed a love for it when I was stationed in Germany but I can't find an American version that comes close. I've tried the usual suspects like Sierra Nevada and Widmer(which was particularly underwhelming). I'm looking for that slightly banana taste you get from German Hef.

I have not tasted an American hefe that impresses me. Harpoon's UFO is pretty good, but nothing special IMO.

Live Oak's but I think it is only available here in Tejas.

Big Horn Hefeweizen

The only American Hef I've found with a banana taste but I think it tastes like an MGD with a banana dropped in it.

That doesn't make me want to try it.

Yes, and it is decent but nothing special. I am sure they are out there, but I have not had an American hefe that can compare with the Franziskaners, etc.

I haven't found an American hefe that has the same banana/clove notes that say Franziskaner, Ayinger or Weihenstephaner have. If you can find the German ones in your area, it's hard to go wrong with those.

Prost!

This is the best I've tried. Granted, I don't seek them out. I like the style, but my preferences are IPAs and Belgian style ales.

This is the one I was thinking of but I couldn't remember the name. I've found the German brands here, but the thick layer of dust always keeps me from buying them.

I wonder why that is? I'm sure most of the American brewmeister's have tasted German hef and realize it's superior. The climate and elevation of Germany is nearly identical to much of the US. I know they have the purity law but that can be replicated. I have to think it's a difference in the wheat or something.

I drink hefe about 75 % of the time and I agree UFO is probably the best. But nothing compares to paulaner, franziskaner, and konig Ludwig...thank god for whole foods!

I'm drinking this Sierra Nevada stuff at the moment. I didn't enjoy the first four, but I'm starting to come around.

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis FTW! Look up their ratings on Beer Advocate. It is a very authentic Hefeweizen and the only American version that taste like a true German one.

That's what I'm drinking. To each his own, but I'm not a fan.

Again, I have to disagree. It's a decent beer but nothing like a true German hef, at least IMO.
