Westvleteren 12 - Is it Worth the Price?

have a birthday coming up and considered treating myself to a few bottles of westvleteren 12. for those of you who have had it, is it THAT much better than a rochefort 10 or st bernardus 12 to justify the price and shipping? or is it the hype and difficulty of obtaining it that make it so desirable?

Wish I knew dude. How much we talking about?

40 US dollars per 12 oz bottle and about that much for shipping from belgianshop.com
that's a helluva lot of rochefort, st bernardus, or chimay for that amount.

yeahhh. I wish I could tell you. But that's ridiculous unless it's the best beer in the world.

Yes it is way better than those. I would say its slightly better than a Westmalle Dubbel.

It is widely considered the best beer in the world so... I've thought about buying some off eBay before but never have. Should have taken a drive when I was in Belgium to get some. I'll try it once though.

I had one of those last week.

I got 3 bottles from belgianshop. It was very good but not my favorite beer of all time. I don't think I'll pay that price again to get more.
Prost!

yeah, i think i should like to try one before i die, but i am not ready to shell out the $40 plus shipping on a single westy. for the sake of comparison, this is what i got from total wine today for slightly over $40:
six pack dead guy ale
bomber bottle new belgium dunkel weiss
12 oz westmalle dubbel
12 oz rochefort 10
12 oz st bernardus 12
12 oz bell's cherry stout
12 oz flying fish tripel (impulse buy - just something new)
12 oz flying fish dubbel (ditto)
and for whoever said it was slightly better than a westmalle dubbel - isn't this comparing two different styles of beer? a dubbel vs. a quad?

This is my opinion.
I really want to try it, but just can't ever justify the price.
I'd rather buy a few St. Bernardus gift sets or a few bombers of Chimay Blue or some Rochefort 10.

Technically yes. But The Westvleteren is an
Abt Quad which has much in common with a dubbel style.....Abts are darker, fruiter than a standard Quad. And I think the Westmalle dubbel has more complexity than any other dubbel. IMO they are very similar in taste.

Good luck finding one. You are not supposed to sell it outside of the brewery. Even if places have it on the menu they never had it when I asked. I saw it in one store behind the counter but the guy in front of me bought all 4 bottles of it.

It is your birthday, though so you ought to try at least one just for the experience and for a point of reference. That's the way I'd rationalize the purchase. Life is short.

there is a cafe at the abbey where one can buy it.
or you can put in the order for a case in advance. i have read it can be a pain in the arse though, and that it is not even always available at the cafe or for order.

They're fairly easy to find. I even find them in Amsterdam. Even in Belgium, they run about $14 a bottle at a cafe.
