I adjusted my formula to use the articles numbers and yes 17 calories is close. But using 3500 calories to burn a pound off, the resulting weight loss over year is insignificant. We don't drink our liquids today at body temp now, most at a lower temp, so the difference is nominal over a year.

Thnks for the mental exercise, I burned of 30 calories thinking about it.

Are you doing you numbers for just one glass. On a diet you should be drinking 8 per day.

Their numbers clearly show 70 calories a day so explain why they are wrong.

By the way I am not spoiling for a fight just interested because most sites say the number is higher than what you said.

I just found another site that verified about 64 calories per day but then it went on to talk about how bad drinking cold water is for the human body. I sure never heard that before.

This article begs to differ with you. Drinking 8 glasses of cold water a day can burn 70 calories a day. Running a mile only burns 100.

But running a mile will increase calorie burning while at rest after also. Another thing to take into consideration is when you are dieting is that as you lose weight, the calories needed to lose weight will be lower. So you might start out with 2000 calories and lose weight but will need lower calories to lose the same weight. You might have to drop it to 1,750 or 1,500 calories to lose the same weight.

Your body having to warm the water while keeping your core temp the same also increase your metabolism.

Once again, I never said it was a magic bullet. I just said you could aid your diet in a very simply way drinking cold water.

And I didn't mean to suggest that 8 glasses of water was better than jogging a mile.

just a general question to everyone..

when people say "i take 1 cheat day a week"......What are you eating?

are you gorging and eating whatever, or are you being conscious and still eating kind of healthy....? how do you do it and what specifically do you eat?

I used to eat everything and anything. At the time I was working out 4 times a week plus cardio. I would be strict as can be for 6 days and go all out and consume a massive amount of food on my cheat day. Used to love my cheat days. And I lost over 80 lbs with cheat days and got down to low bodyfat. I don't think it affected me negatively at all as long as you are eating good food and exercising for 6 days a week.

I wouldn't suggest eating 4k calories.

If you are on a 1500 cal diet you just want to trick the brain into thinking you aren't starving. So you would want to eat maybe 2500 which would be normal for an adult male.

I am also not 100% sold that cheating works for everyone at any point in a diet.

My body is so used to 1200 calories now, that when I cheat I can gain anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds as my body stores every ounce of extra food and the and the sodium from the meal causes massive water retention.

From what I understood, your body needs about 10 calories per lb of weight just to function on a normal basis. Let's say I'm 260 so 2600 calories needed per day. Wouldn't I always be burning more calories than is necessary if I'm on a 1500 calorie/day diet? At least until I reached 150lbs?

In theory yes, but at some point your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism will slow.

I went 8 days eating under 1200 calories and didn't lose an ounce. Should have lost at least 4 pounds based on my weight, but my metabolism slowed and forced a plateau.

That is why some suggest having a cheat day to confuse your metabolism so it won't go into potato famine mode.

I don't purposely do this. I just eat regularly a few times a month when I am out with friends or family.

If I did this too many times, I think I might fall off the diet.

So do you recommend just eating normal maybe on gamedays or something? That way life isn't totally off center and you're still doing good? I'm not talking about eating two whole pizzas or anything, just normal stuff like grilling a steak and having a potato and a few adult beverages. Which if I had to guess would probably be about 2500-3500 calories.

I have no real recommendation since for me when I cheat, I pay for it with a big arse gain.

Now maybe it keeps me from hitting more plateaus but working out more can also help restart your metabolism.

Cheating seems like trying to have your cake and eat it too.

I do it a few times a month just to keep from being a total recluse crazy hermit.

Examples- Whatever you feel like eating. I would eat a whole rack of ribs and french fries or a 12 in shrimp poboy or a seafood platter. Anything will work. It helped crave my cravings and helped keep my metabolism going in my opinion. Like the other poster, I would gain anywhere from 3-6 pounds just from this day but within 2 days it would be all the way off and I would usually lose a few more pounds the rest of the week. This only worked when I was dieting strict though. Say my maintenance caloric intake was 2,500 cal, I would have to be dieting(6 days a week) around 1,250-1,750 cal for this to really work. And I was working out and exercising at the time.

Most of the gained weight will be from stored muscle glycogen(stored energy in muscles) anyway. When you deprive yourself of carbs there isn't much stored glycogen in your muscles. Eat a cheat day and you will gain tons of water due to the stored energy. After a few days of depriving your body of carbs, your weight will drop. This is why most people lose a ton of weight their first week of dieting. They aren't really losing fat, just water weight.

Cheat of the week? French Market Bistro Friday night. Dinner was 850 cals by my estimation, I'm still 300 under for the day. I dieted and walked a lot since I knew we were going out to dinner.

I won't.

No loss today but my cheap arse digital scale only shows a drop after you lose about 2 pounds.

I do feel weak as hell today so I may eat a few more calories than normal.

Some friends have already called to get me to go out after the game, but I may pull into hermit mode and make an excuse.

I've been on a roll last two weeks and don't want to stop it.

Here is a really random piece of advice for everyone, but it works.

Cold and Flu season is coming. If you get sick food doesn't really taste that good but you eat by habit. Intentionally cut down on your food until you get well. Then do a lot of ab work. Your stomach has shrunk while you were sick and you want to keep the reduction.

When I lived in Denham Springs, I joined Weight Watchers. I did this because I was thirty-five pounds over weight plus my blood work came back really awful. I lost forty pounds in three months plus my lab results came back great. I moved to Alabama and I just watched what I ate. I started gaining weight again plus I had to start taking Lipitor. I joined Weight Watchers up here two months ago. I'm back to my weight goal plus I no longer need to take Lipitor. WW isn't a diet but just a healthier way of eating. I found out that I get motivated knowing that I'm going to have to weigh in on a weekly basis. I like when I lose weight and when I gain a pound or two, it pushes me to make sure that I lost what I gained. I know that I must be a weak person because I sure couldn't do it on my own. I definitely watch what I eat now and I can eat and prepare quite a few dishes that have a low fat content. The fat free ice cream tastes pretty good.

Anytime my step dead gets 10 to 15 pounds over weight he joins WW until he gets it back to his ideal weight. He breaks out his little scale to weigh all his food.

WW simply teaches smart portion control and healthier eating.
