Off the top of my head:
Via Matta for Italian, near the public Garden
Radius
No. 9 Park
Clio - not far from where you're staying and very good.

Let me think about it and I'll give you some more.

jr, I was there a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed Union Oyster House.. Some people call it a tourist place, but, lots of locals were there. It's the oldest restraunt in America, and has some really neat stuff on the wall, and the old building is interesting to walk around in.. Great raw bar,,,Otis reccomended to me, and I enjoyed...

Oya-One of the best sushi places in America.Rated as the number one new restaurant in America in 2008. The flavor combinations were amazing and unlike any experience I have had before. $$$$$$ though.

Craigie on Main- Great contemporary American food. Order seafood here. This place uses a pig in its advertising but is like the opposite of Cochon (where seafood is not good and pork is). At Craigie the seafood was great and prob better than anything I have had here in NO (their non-Seafood stuff was great as well). Casual Bistro style restaurant.

You will need reservations at both places.

This is a great restaurant, but it's in Cambridge and may not be convenient for the OPs purposes.

Yeah, it is in Cambridge. But Cambridge is really close to downtown. The restaurant is 2.5 miles from Boston Common and takes less than 10 minutes by cab. For comparison Clancy's is 4.5 miles from downtown NO.

My bad, they moved from Craigie St to Main (duh), which is more convenient than the old location.

Go to the Italian area of town in the North End and eat at any restaurant in there. Phenomenal.

Off the top of my head- Al Dente

I didn't particularly care for Union Oyster House when I ate there this summer. It's definitely a place to go just for the experience and the history of the place. The food- meh.

Doyle's Cafe in I think the Jamaica Plain's area. Best clam chowder I've ever had. It's out there though might be too inconvenient.

When we were in Boston, one of our local guys referred us to Grill 23 and it was very, very good. We didn't want to go to a Flemings or Ruth's Chris - you can hit those chains up anywhere. Grill 23 is a local joint and I highly recommend it.
