A/C not working, outside unit not turning on

Can anybody give me any tips to try and get it going? When I turn it on, the fan blows, but no cool air. I checked out the outside unit and it's just humming, like an electrical hum, but the fan never turns.

Be very careful.... but try to spin the fan to see if it will start turning...If a capacitor is malfunctioning this will sometimes work.

Was it on all day? Compressor may have over heated and tripped the internal kill switch. Or you have a bad start capacitor. Call a tech.

ETA: If a central air conditioner's compressor stops on a hot day, the high-pressure limit switch may have tripped; reset it by pushing the button, located in the compressor's access panel.

Compasator is bad. Open it up and look for round part in unit silver part if swollen where wire connects then it's bad

Relay or a breaker maybe. Flip all the breakers around the inside unit (usually in your garage) on and off and that will sometimes reset a stuck relay. My inside unit has like 3 breakers.

this...otherwise, you are likely out of luck for the night....

as hot as it is, I would either go to a hotel for the night or go to the wal marks and buy a window unit....

of course, some jabrone on here a few months back got through the night a while back by strapping a box fan to the top of his unit for the night...

I'll pick "burnt out fan motor" for $500 Pat.

How much will it cost you?

I have the side panel off to access the power connections, and everything looks fine. But the humming is coming from the fan motor, and the metal around the center of the fan is hot as shite. Where is the capacitor located, by the fan motor, or by the power terminals?

Looks like a small silver army cantine. Bang it a few times with a wrench.

This same thing happened to ours where I'm currently renting. Try turning the blade with a stick or something to see if you can get it going again. Ours finally came back on on it's own, but anytime the fan has a chance to stop it has trouble coming back on again.

FYI - The capacitor (silver thing) tends to swell when it goes bad.

Capacitor looks fine, no sign of failure. I'm gonna guess the fan motor.

To answer an earlier question, it was set on 78 all day, so it may have been running a lot, I wasn't home.

By the power terminals

If the unit is more than 3 years old, and the fan motor is hot. that's it. The motor has a fail safe to cut off if it overheats.

Bad timing. But it always is.

Did you try manually spinning it to see if it would jump start? You may want to turn the system off and let the motor cool down. Spray with garden hose. Then try

Yeah, it's trying to go, but never quite gets there. Screw it. Going stay at the brother-in-law's. Thanks for the suggestions.

And to the guy who asked if it was older than 3 years, it's still the original from when the house was built.........in '94. I knew the day was coming when it was going to start breaking down.

Same thing happens to mine. I have to do the same. Or I give it a swift kick.

May be the flux capacitor.
