There is really no other taste or consistency to compare it with, but, I would liken it most to a dark, dense, earthy mushroom sans the wild flavor. When cooked properly it shouldn't be mushy or rubbery. I love escargot, but will admit that mostly it's the persillade sauce (garlic, herb, butter) that's it's traditionally served with that is most enjoyable. Also enjoy it italian style with buffalo mozzarella and cooked tomato.

If you're in New Orleans, try it at Crepe Nanou, it's delicious and was the first escargot that I ever tried.

Probably just tasting the garlic and butter they were served in I would guess. Throw a shitty mushroom in garlic and butter and you have the same thing. The meat itself is probably one of the most overrated foods i have ever known.

Pretty good low tones. The best version I ever had was in a long gone Chicago restaurant, The Bakery I think. Served in puff pastry with a puree of back-eyed peas and slivers of bacon. I tried several times to replicate, something I'm pretty good at, no success.

Not for everyone.

Doubt people would eat alot if they were just called snails, plus it is a French delicacy...I mean would people not stay away from RumpRoast if it was called Cow's arse?

my guess is for the same reason that calves' thymus and pancreas are called sweetbreads instead

That must have been an ancient advertising genius
who came up with "sweetbreads"
