Technically yes.

But in reality, not really.

Yes. I can't remember who it is, but there is a really good player in CBB whose parents didn't want him playing AAU because of all the sketchy shite associated with. I just heard this the other day, hopefully someone can help me out with who it is.

It happens but most of the rankings are based on camp performance and what you do on the circuit. One example, from a little ways back, is Marcus Taylor who played for Michigan State. He didn't make his name on the circuit. On the other hand, someone from a small town like Von Wafer can make a big splash that has ripples affecting his entire life.

But, like others have said, it's pretty hard to become elite in basketball without the circuit. . .which is no doubt a function of why there are so many shady people associated with it.

Yeah, there are a ton of guys from foreign countries who come over as projects. But they have more baggage than most non-New York City AAU players.

It seems ashame that if your not palying aau ball at 10 yo you have no shot at playing varsity in high school.

It's probably more like 13 or 14. The days of a guy like Jordan not making his freshman varsity team and becoming a superstar later on are over, but even John Wall was a no name nationally at the end of his sophomore year.

Did Pete Maravich play AAU ball? Shaq?

Yeah, Wall was cut from his HS team his freshman year and transfered to a private school so he get an extra year and play again as a freshman. I guess he must have not been that impressive early on to get a lot of attention.

He was at a Raleigh public school, and apparently he had a lot of attitude problems.

As for Maravich or even Shaq, that was a long time ago. Things have changed so much in the past two decades, with guys like OJ Mayo and Taylor King verbaling after the 8th grade.

Ironically, Kentucky and UCLA never saw those guys.

While on the subject does anyone have any synopsis of the various South Louisiana AAU teams? Camps etc.?

I've seen a couple of the younger teams in the area and have seen several players that have AAU experience.

Yeah, he went to Broughton, which was the big rival for the HS I went to. You couldn't find a school more ill-suited for Wall, the whole school is full of rich, white southern douches. I had heard the attitude problems were overblown and most the players were upset Wall was left off the team, I guess the coach really wasn't a fan of JW.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised that Broughton was his high school. I figured he would have been somewhere less affluent. I'm not sure which school that would have been though. Maybe Apex?

They dont play AAU. And some people can be really good varsity bball players without playing AAU.

Apex would work. He'd fit in at Southeast (I wanna say he was even districted there), but probably wouldn't have gotten the guidance he needed. The best coach for him would've been Coach Rob at Leesville though, he helped Anthony Richardson (another uber talented kid with attitude problems) mature before he crashed and burned at FSU. I'm obviously biased though since I played for him and was friends with his son.

I didn't play AAU ball and made my varsity high school team in LA 5A.

to master an activity, it helps to practice the actual activity.

If the other best players are in the AAU then you wont see that level of competition until you are in college and you may not be able to adapt.

The other thing you need besides competition and practice is good coaching. If the coach in your town's high school plays 3-2 zone and you want to learn man to man, you better have an alternative set up.

This whole thread is basically a load of horseshite, except the Wall part.

It is definitely possible and not that uncommon. And tons of high school starters don't play AAU.

The part about not playing Varsity unless you are in an AAU program by 10 (or even 13 or 14) is particularly misleading. There are NBA players who never played the sport at all until their teens, or even high school.

I'm talking about guys that have to get on the radar of college scouts. They usually need to have some AAU affiliation by the team they are 13 or 14. Obviously it's not needed for making a varsity high school team. I misread that part. But all the kids I knew that got even cursory interest from colleges (and I'm not talking about Duke or UNC, just Ivy League schools, mid-majors, and directional schools) played with traveling teams at some point of their high school career.

There are always late bloomers who are complete freaks either athletically or in terms of one skill, but those are usually the exception to the rule.

Even in a less competitive sport like lacrosse, anyone attending a non-traditional power has to be pretty damn good by their sophomore year to warrant any attention by top 20 schools.
