Yes and Yes. If you search, you'll see some recent threads discussing them in response to similar questions.

Komodo cookers like the egg are great cookers, but they are often referred to as smokers. This is certainly not the case,... smokers generally operate at low heat and cook over several hours. The ceramic komodo cookers like the egg operate at very high heat levels and cook very quickly. Despite this difference, when using lump charcoal the egg delivers a decent smoky flavor.

The egg also functions as a grill. I had one for a few years and ultimately sold it in favor of a traditional smoker for bbq and a gas pit for grilling. But if your looking for the best of both worlds in a single unit the egg is a good choice.

They can certainly maintain low temps for long hours.

I've had a few folks tell me this, but with mine I had a hard time keeping that 200-225 mark while still giving enough smoke for butts or ribs.

I'm sure the BGE is fantastic, but at least look at the Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM). The WSM can be had for $299 and maintains temps for 12 plus hours at 225-250. Perfect for those long smoking sessions at a fraction of the cost of a BGE.

The WSM isn't a very convenient grill though so if you are looking at that aspect of it maybe purchase a Weber Performer and WSM to cover all of your bases for only $600.

I've had no problem maintaining 200-225 for at least 12 hrs.

What he said. I bought a WSM from Amazon for under $200 and have loved it. I replaced the water pan with a Brinkmann for longer smoke sessions and it's great.

You can make you own ceramic grill for about $50 - $60. This was posted Monday:

I admire your passion, but it's not even close. A clay planter pot with an electric element does not equal a ceramic.

I admire ingenuity. The cheapest kamado-type grill cost about $6oo.

My egg has a beef shoulder clod on it that went on at 9pm. I'll pull it off around noon tomorrow for our "Stanford Group" food bank giveaway.

No I'm just cooking for friends lunch tomorrow. It'll cook all night at 250-275.

there is no way and I repeat no way that a clay pot cooker could replicate an Egg or Weber Smokey Mountain. It may work OK for a cook or two, but will eventually become too much work to make it worth while. You will have to replace the hot plate a lot as it is not made to be held inside an oven.

bullet style, but not like a brinkman. much better. holds heat and temps well, low maintainance during cooking, which is important when doing 14+ hour cooks. check out LINK
