Mrs. Popinski and I will be spending a few days in Charleston before heading to Columbia for the LSU / USC game. Any restaurants that are "can't miss?" Also, a good breakfast reccomendation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

What TA said (Maglolia's is where Tyler Florence got his start) and another great one is Southend Brewery on E Bay Street- the best wings I've ever had. Cool old building, microbrew

Peninsula Grill- amazing food, really awesome location

Jestine's Kitchen- good low country food

She crab soup and shrimp and grits are two of my favorite local foods from Charleston

also look into Daniel's Island and Mt Pleasant for restaurants

If you can make it I suggest taking the walking ghost tour of Charleston. It tells you a lot about the history of the city and you get to see a lot of places that you may have missed while walking around.

Have fun! I love Charleston!

Nothing new here, but another vote for Peninsula Grill and Magnolia.

And pre/post dinner drinks at the roof-top bar at the Market Pavilion Hotel is another "must do" IMO.

I love that hotel. They lost our reservation, so we got bumped into a terrace suite.

Is Hank's still there? It had just opened when I moved away, but it has a lot of buzz surrounding it. Anyone been? Reviews?

Thanks for the input. I am making notes now. I read about the Peninsula Grill and I will make reservations there for sure.

I ate there about four years ago. Don't know if it's still there, but I remember it being pretty good. I had some seared tuna that was excellent.

I am looking for a nice place too to dine with my g/f... Peninsula grill looks nice. It says jacket preferred but I'm combining the florida/USC trip so I won't have room to pack a jacket. Think they would care that much especially if you sat outside?

Not fine dining, but a friend of mine's son opened a soul/New Orleans/low country food type restaurant there called the Glass Onion. Another friend of mine ate there last week and enjoyed it very much. She said the poboys were made with Leidenheimer bread, so they are doing that up right.

No, you'll be fine without a jacket inside or out. Slacks and a button-down will work.

Yes Hank's is still kicking and doing well.

For breakfast might want to try Hominy Grill. A little off the beaten path of the downtown restaurants and not a greasy spoon type of place but very good none the less.

Another good restaurant is FIG. The chef is a rising star in the culinary scene and is said will be the next James Beard award winner.

Peninsula Grill is very good. A buddy of mine is a chef there and he is very good. Bobby Flay recently did a throw down with the head chef there for his coconut cake.

A personal favorite of mine is Boulevard Diner in Mt. Pleasant just across the bridge. Moe's Downtown is a good place to grab a drink as well as the Griffon. Both Rooftop bars are good and a scene and be scene place.

For the most part as long as you stay away from Hyman's Seafood, anything called Crab Shack or House, and Bubba Gumps.

All the rage right now is Firefly Sweet Tea vodka. Very popular and you will probably see cases upon cases at the USC game. I recommend trying it. We took some to the Auburn game and were pretty popular with it.

Any other questions about Charleston let me know. Been here 7+ years.

Thanks I will definately try the vodka tea. There were some poeple talking it up on here the other day. Mrs. Popinski is expecting baby popinski #2 so she will be missing out on sampling this drink.

Other than the food we have 3 days to spend there and are open for suggestions on where to explore as well.

The weather should be nice so should be a good time to visit.

I always suggest just walking around. Most things downtown are all walking distance or you can grab a rickshaw/pedi-cab pretty easily. Just walking around checking out the battery, rainbow row, The Market (big tourist draw but good for at least walking through once) and the houses and streets South of Broad. A carriage ride would also be nice.

A trip out to Ft. Sumter is worth it and would get a nice little view of the city from the harbor. The aircraft carrier Yorktown just across the harbor at Patriot's Point is also a nice little stop if you like WWII history.

Of course the beaches (I recommend Sullivan's Island but Folly is nice too) are nice to go out to and walk around at.

The plantations are about 15+/- miles outside the city up Hwy 61. Never really done that but I know they are popular tourist destinations.

Their is an aquarium but to me it was nothing really new and seemed kinda pricey. I think it could be educational for someone from Kansas or someone who just really really enjoys aquariums.
