What's the OB opinion of Kershaw knives?

Just ordered their Launch 1 off a website their homepage directed me to.

Normally it goes for $150, but I got it for $95 off the other site.

I had a Spyderco for 7 years (and loved it), but lost it recently. I've been looking for a fast action blade since then, and decided on the Kershaw Launch 1.

Any info is appreciated.

I think a lot of opinions will be based on Kershaw's folder offerings, not the auto knives.

I know nothing about the latter, the former I consider a "value" knife.

I've got an old folder made by an American company named Camillus (went out of business, but made good knives) that I love, but I got so used to the fast action of the Spyderco, i felt like I needed something that came out of the pocket a little quicker.

The Spyderco I had was a $200 knife, so didn't want to spend that much. The Kershaw was a good compromise.

I've got several Kershaw Scallions, with serrated/smooth blade.

Can't say I've owned a lot of knives, but it's the best one so far.

I had an assisted open Kershaw open in my pocket and stab me in the leg. Won't touch then.

I can't argue with that.. because it did happen to me once in the 5 years or so that I've been carrying one daily.

It does have a lock, but I don't use it.

i can't give an extensive opinion on kershaw knives as i've never owned but one, which was recently given to me as a xmas present

i like the assisted opening feature and it seems durably built, however, the main function of a knife is to cut things and right out of the box it is as sharp as a spoon....

disappointing to say the least

Mine didn't have a lock.

Supposedly you're supposed to only use assisted opening knives with the belt clip. That came from a friend so idk how true it is. I took mine off because I didn't like it clipped to the top of my pocket and it was flopping around in my pocket when it jewged me. If I had known that before I would have just not carried the knife. I guess if you like having it clipped to your pocket than it would be fine? I can open my non-spring loaded knife one handed just fine so I don't see any point in the assisted open.

Yea I like them sharpened at the manufacturer too. My step dad loves putting an edge on a blade, it'll give him something to do.

USA made Kershaws are good knives. I dont mess with the China/Taiwan ones.

I always carry my EDC knives so that the blade is facing the outside of the pocket, not into the pocket. Gonna be a lot harder for it to open unintentionally like that

So you were carrying an AO knife loosely moving around in a pocket without a safety lock in place when your thigh, hand, or loose change pushed the AO edge of the blade and it opened?

Manufacture defect.

PS: sorry about your leg.

Similar to the old fella here in town a few years back carrying a 22 derringer in his front pocket along with his nitro pill bottle. The trigger guard was large enough to allow the bottle to depress the trigger and we had to dig a .22 out of his leg.

The one I ordered is USA made. I had to order it from knife center via kershaw website. It's on backorder with no eta.

My Kershaw I bought in 2002 was made in Japan and has held up well. Just sharpened it on Sunday.

I just got one for Christmas. Unfortunately it was made in China. It is extremely sharp with a wide short blade that fits your hand good for a small knife. I like it so far

Well to be fair, it doesn't say anywhere that not carrying it clipped will result in stabbed legs. I prolly coulda got paid for that. That's a CYA defect on their part.

I didn't like the knife anyway. The blade opened so hard that it could have yanked the knife outta your hand if you weren't ready for it. I don't see what the point is.

Benchmade AXIS 300 Flipper is a nice mix of cost/quality at about $160 or so.

sorry the one i got wasn't sharp...i get downvoted for stating i got a dull knife?
it's not like i wanted a dull knife so that i could have a reason to bash kershaw

people on TD these days will downvote someone stating that the sky is blue if they don't like the fact that it is blue

ETA: also, this particular thing(downvoting reviews), bugs me because don't people want to read critical reviews? aren't critical reviews the most important ones? imagine if every fricking review was someone blowing sunshine up your arse about every product out there...

I'm just giving you shite.

fwiw all my Kershaws have been very sharp out of the box but some do not have a durable edge and dull quickly.

All I've carried for the last 15+ years are kershaw assisted opening knives. I bought a few seconds off of ebay cheap and they have held up better than I could have ever hoped for. I've lost 1, which was no big deal since I bought them for less than 1/3 of a new one's price.

FWIW...the factory seconds were tight and slow to open, which was fixed by adjusting the blade screw.
