My nephew just got a yamaha bruin its a nice bike a little cheaper than the recon

In that same 2 weeks we probably wouldn't let our loved ones drive an automobile either, I am sure the number and severity of those accidents is a lot higher. If your kids have grown up around this type of equipment they understand them more than the kid that jumps on a CanAm 800 at his dad's buddies house, and dad and his buddies said "give it a whirl".
Honda 250 recon like others have suggested, great bike and he will run it into adulthood.

Maturity is the issue hear to me, clearly in your quote you say "grown up around" the kid is 8yrs old, this doesn't exactly constitute "grown up around." But these are just my thoughts brother

I agree to a degree, most of the accidents I hear of are due to negligence by the parent, my 6yr old son has been riding since he could walk, although he is not a grown up, he has grown up riding and I have no problem letting him ride/drive my ATV under close supervision and with the proper clothing and safety gear.

I bought my kid the Polaris 90 because he was just too green for the Recon. Now he has graduated to the Recon. Depends on your kids experience. i'd go with the little Polaris 90 if he is just starting out. 250 if he has some experience.

I agree on the maturity issue. We made ours learn on a small bike and he rides really well. He only rides here at the house with supervision. He wears a helmet at all times and carries no passengers. He gets one warning if we see him cutting up and then it's parked. We've had zero issues and I trust him to act right on it . He is a good kid,makes good grades , and very respectful to others. Not all kids can handle the responsibility of a machine like that.

Get him the 250 and have them put a governor on it until he is old enough to handle all the power.

this cost extra? Can i remove it later myself or i must take into dealer?

Make sure you get him a helmet which is cool enough that he will wear it. Head injuries are not what you want.

I'm old and have a 250 Recon, and love it.
I can't imagine needing anything bigger if just for riding. And if you get stuck, it's light enough to pretty much pick up and move it over. And it's plenty damn fast enough to mess up a fragile human body.
The age issue is a whole nother can of beans.
My parents let me get a motorcycle when I was 11. I only broke one leg on it.
I live where there are more streets than woods, so I can't imagine letting my daughter own a 4 wheeler. Not saying it's not the "right" thing to do for you though.
I see parents let their kids do all kinda stuff that I wouldn't dream of... maybe I'm just old, and have only one kid and not enough time to make another one.
Best of luck, whatever you decide.

My little brother got a Recon 250 when he was 10 and its honestly the most fun 4 wheeler we own.

Sorry, for getting back to you so late. Been (Grandadding)going on field trips.
If you are a little handy, you can purchase a restrictor plate from the dealer and install it yourself, or have them install it and you can remove it yourself when you are ready.
They can also govern it through the throttle linkage.

I had a Honda 70 when I was a kid. Ran the wheels off of that thing.
I would buy a used badger or something, keep it for a few years, then upgrade to a rancher.
He could hurt himself Pretty good with a 250 right now. Give him a couple years and then get him something he can really grow into.

get the Chinese bike. you can control the throttle on it. And it's lightweight. I'd never put my kid on a heavy bike at that age.
Mine is 8 and we still have the Chinese bike. bought it for a decent price near Lafayette.
