Buy a TJ (97-06) model with 6 cyl. and 5spd. I've had a '89 YJ 4cyl, '02 TJ 6cyl, and '10 JK 6cyl. The TJ was by far my favorite. That 6cyl had some major power, all three were lifted w/ 33's and I got around 15 city, 17 hwy. The YJ with 4 cyl was fine on stock tires but once I went to 33's it wouldn't pull anything or get above 60 on interstate. It needed the axles re-geared something awful.

If you're going to get a jeep as a weekend vehicle, get a real jeep. Go with a CJ7. The new Jeep ride like cars.

I have a 3.8 2007
I don't under stand the whole it is slow attitude. It's a Jeep with big tires. It's not race car. It gets and goes just fine. I have no problem with it. 6 speed 4:10 gears.
It does however burn a lot of oil. No smoke no drippage, just burns. Per Jeep, it's just a known issue that this year and engine does. I only put about 8k miles a year on it so no big deal for me.

97 to 06 TJ with AC, power steering, manual transmission, and 4.0 6 inline is what you need to look for. The best would be a rubicon or rubicon unlimited.

Don't buy any 4 cyl model, no matter how cheap.

Can second this from experience but only b/c I want to be able to pull more than just my wheelbarrow around the yard, otherwise I love it. I have a '99 TJ, 5speed 4cyl no AC, and bought it a year old. More room and power would be great.

Look for an '04-06 wrangler unlimited (only years they were made). A deal can be found if you're patient but you're going to pay at the least 10k for it. You'll appreciate the extra length. Find one with a hard top, you can buy a soft top later.

I'll second, third and fourth this as this is what I'm on the lookout for currently.

I'm always looking to try to catch one on Craigslist. 97-02, 6cyl, 5 speed man. If you see one, you have to be ready to buy it. They don't last long.

Good luck with that, thats why I have my new engine in. 1 quart per 1k miles is BS

I was really close to buying one about 8 years ago. I was trading in my old Grand cherokee, and had always wanted another Jeep. But at the time I was doing a lot of traveling with my job and didn't like the idea of doing that behind the wheel of a Jeep. It was a 2004 or 2005 LJ, and if it had a hardtop I probably would have bought it. Ended up with another Grand Cherokee (2005 model) and drove it for 6 years before buying my 2004 TJ two summers ago.

If you like the looks, and can actually find one, look for an LJ. That is the Jeep Unlimited back when they were built on the TJ model. Longer wheelbase, a little more room, and still just 2 doors.

I have one I'm about to get rid of.
69.5K miles on it.
It's an automatic though.

No 4 cylinders.

2007-2011v-6 is crap. They have bad motor issues. I have a 2012 4 door Rubicon with 6 speed Pentastar v6 and it is fun as hell to drive. No mechanical issues yet and Jeep extended the warranty to 100k miles

why do Wranglers get such crappy mileage? Is it the weight?

The fact that its a giant flying shoe box doesn't help either. The inline 6 is a big engine, so it uses big engine gas. Lifts and big tires kill mileage more than anything though.

I had a '74 right after high school. 3 on the tree with a 302. My uncle has it now. It rode like a brick with tires mounted to it. And components for a Jeep are a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to cone by. My uncle said he would sell me my old one bavk for $5k. I passed. Too much to convert it to power steering and power brakes.

Not bad mileage for those years. I found my gem two years ago. 2004 TJ with just under 33k miles on it at the time. I'm only up to 49k now. I can probably keep it running well for a looooooooong time!

I've wanted a jeep since I was 15. I was planning on getting one this summer but my wife and I just had twins so I tradtional jeep probaby won't happen. I've sorta been looking at 4 door jeeps but they mostly seem pricey in the 50-75k miles range. It won't be my primary driver so I don't know what I'll end up doing
