Thinking of buying a used jeep mainly just for a secondary vehicle for when I don't want to drive my company truck. I think I remember some saying to avoid certain year models but don't remember what they were or the reasoning for it.

I've got a 2004 Wrangler Rubicon for sale, FWIW. It's been awesome - except on gas with a near 80 mile daily commute.

I have a 97 wrangler. Love it but not real comfortable of a ride. Fun as hell though.

Look for a later model, non-lifted example.
Don't buy any 4 cyl model, no matter how cheap.

The auto's from like 97-02 are terrible. The engines from 07-12 are weak. 4 cylinders are fine if you are not pulling anything, tho.

Was thinking of getting an 06 which is the year my son was born and keeping it for him until he's old enough to drive

why do Wranglers get such crappy mileage? Is it the weight?

Really don't know. I think the whole Jeep family is like that

In high school I had a 1995 5spd 4 cylinder Wrangler. That thing got the absolute worst gas mileage ever.

Besides that, it was fun to drive and the bitches loved it when the top was off.

Look for an '04-06 wrangler unlimited (only years they were made). A deal can be found if you're patient but you're going to pay at the least 10k for it. You'll appreciate the extra length. Find one with a hard top, you can buy a soft top later.

I bought an '04 unlimited for my daughter after she totaled her '02 Sahara. State Farm gave me 9k for the total after I kept it and I sold it for $3500. I found the unlimited in Baytown for 13500. Not bad

Selectjeeps.com has a continually changing stock of used jeeps that all go through their garage for tune ups, mechanical fixes and clean bill of health.

No man, it's the aerodynamics, or more specifically, the lack thereof.

Most vehicles in the Jeep family are a square brick on wheels. Not gonna get much gas mileage out of them. That's not what they were designed for.

2007-2011 wranglers had a horrible 3.8L Chrysler crate motor - If you pull anything or want a little get up stay out of these years - sounds like you are in the market for something older though

I would take $14,200 for it. Worth a little more than that, but it will need new tires before too much longer. 78,600 miles.

Someone on Jeep Forum once said that you drive a brick on wheels with a tent for a roof, so what did you expect?

Toss in a pair of solid axles and all of that weight, with a motor that is more torque oriented and low end power, the MPG's are going to suffer.

If you like the looks, and can actually find one, look for an LJ. That is the Jeep Unlimited back when they were built on the TJ model. Longer wheelbase, a little more room, and still just 2 doors. I have a 2004 TJ Columbia Edition and love it. About the only complaint is I'd like a little more room in it.
