What's the scoop on the following?

All of the modern engines are of a much higher quality than what they used to be.
You can debate the subject up and down and it'll always come back to, "do your proper maintenance and you'll be fine."

Most of the commercial guys run Yamaha, that might say something.
The Coast Guard is running a lot of Hondas now...might say something too.
My neighbor just traded a Yammy for a Zuke and swears by the Zuke, hates Yamaha.
I've heard a lot of positive things about the etec.

I'd price them all and see what works best for your present and future budget.

I'll buy that (how you take care of it is how it will be).

I know some are 2 stroke and some are 4. Is there that big of a difference in mpg?

Eta: sorry, I meant mpg...

Oil is high as giraffe pussy. Somewhere around $75 a gallon. At least that's what my camp neighbor told me he has twin 250s, loves the motors, hates the price to run them.

If it were me, salt = 4, fresh = 2.

Id get a 4 either way. Better fuel economy, quieter.

Only way I'd get a 4 for fresh is party barge.

I also think within brands there are some sizes that just work better than others. I know a guy who has 3 300 Yamaha 4 strokes on his boat. His last rigging was 3 250s. He's had tons of trouble with the 300s and had zero trouble with the 250s.

In that, I'd guess every brand has their sweet spot motor where the components just work together better. No telling how much research goes into research between models, but say for a component like a lower unit there may be flaws in the design if running on a 300 where on the 250 two lifetimes of use would be fine (substitute 225, 200...).

How to make sense of it all, I don't know.

Performance/acceleration. I do not care at all about economy or sound in a fresh water fishing boat. I do not want to ever have to change the oil either.

Sure is sweet idling in a party barge with a 4 stroke you barely hear though.
