Odd looking boats for sure but won't rule them out. What are some other brands I should look at?

Pangas have been around forever. They aren't made for looks, more for practicality. As stated already, if you want a boat you can run to the rigs with, then hit shallow flats on the way back in, Panga is definitely worth more than a cursory look.

Regarding buying used, what checks should/can be done by me? Should I be able to bring it to a mechanic? What will he look at? If the boat is not near my local mechanic, can you arrange an appointment with any mechanic?

Take the boat out for a good test run. If you are serious about buying that boat, ask the owner to take it out with him for a fishing trip. I'd offer up putting down a deposit to show them you actually are a serious buyer.
Once out there, have him go through the boat with you to see how things work (if they work) and get a feel for the boat.

You can also get a boat survey from particular mechanics/surveyors but if you aren't spending huge money, I wouldn't worry about it.

That being said, if everything works out well after the test run, I'd buy it, then take it to a mechanic you know just to check everything out and run a necessary tune-up just to start off boat ownership on the right foot.

In particular, check the transom for cracks and other spider cracks on the boat, etc...
Remember, it is used...so there will likely be a little wear here and there.

Shouldn't I have a mechanic check out the engine before I buy?

You won't likely be looking at any hard used stuff in that price range. Should all be pretty low hours stuff.

If it cold-starts well and runs good I wouldn't worry too much about it. Certainly wouldn't hurt though.

absofrickinglutely. get a compression check done. find out how many hours. I would purchase <100-150 hours for the price range you are looking at. know a guy who recently blew a newer optimax at 140 hours. GET IT CHECKED.
get a fiberglass guy to check out transom. also have him look to make sure the cap and hull and joined properly. boats take a pounding in the gulf/miss river. get under the boat. inspect the pad for gashes. people are stupid. they could have ran it up on an oyster reef. you could get a deal for the damages they didnt fix. check compartments and lids. makes sure they are not cracked. check center console screws. makes sure they are secure and not coming up.

Wouldn't hurt one bit, but I think the test run is far more important.
The risk you run in asking the seller to test run his boat, then take it from him to bring it to a mechanic is testing his patience when other buyers may have cash in hand and won't make them deal with that crap.
You are taking the boat from his use and preventing him from showing it to other buyers.
Some buyers might understand, most will sell it to someone else...and your boat might slip through your fingers.

Test run...most problems can be seen then.
Hope it works out for ya...remember -

Wasn't talking either/or. I definitly plan on riding in something before i buy it. But for example, our current boat will run fine sometimes and not run fine sometimes. This is something that a mechanic could posibly pick up that a ride might not.

Find a seller that's cool with it all and you're set.

I hope you have fun with it all. I LOVED boat shopping and was kinda sad to see it end.

Best of luck.

Here's a good example for you....this is my current boat, I toy with the idea of selling to get a bigger boat...$30K would be my lowest number. I think it's reasonable, the boat honestly is in near perfect condition. Been washed/waxed with Orpine every time its taken out the water. Slept with its cover on EVERY TIME even when it's in our shop parked during deer season. Serviced regularly by the Yamaha dealer. The reason I'm telling you all this is so you can see what you SHOULD be able to get for $30K- IMO it needs to be PERFECT. When I was looking at some used ones before I bought new, there was a lotta blue sky out there- boats were in not great shape for $20K 5 years ago.

Man, I have the opportunity to buy a 2009 24 bay champ a with a 300 for significantly less. Just don't feel like going through the hassle of selling mine. I'm thinking about buying it and just turning around and selling it...

Yeah? 59.8 mph on the wet test when new. Runs a consistent 53-55 mph loaded.

I can tell you that you don't want to go faster than 60 in it- it starts to walk around a lot.

Money was no object when I rigged it- I actually wanted a 300 HDPI, but Yamaha quit building that engine in 2007. My idea was to go 70, but once I saw 60, I no longer wanted that.

Blazer reccomended the 200 HDPI for that boat.

look man. I know you are proud of your blazer bay. you expecting $30k for it is evident. that boat will always be top tier of the bottom line of bay boats no matter how you try to justify it. I dont want to go 55 in a boat that is going to beat me to shite. I want to go 55 in a correctly powered heavy boat that is going to take waves good.
