If you or your wife are recoil sensitive then get a 9mm.

Otherwise, it does nothing that a 40 or 45 can't do. 9mm lacks the power of a 40 and 45.

I understand the trade offs but a .45 makes a bigger hole so there is no way around that

The recoil reputation of the .45 made it an adjustment but also made me a better shooter. You just anticipate more recoil than you get. So I found out I was bracing forward right before the shot and was hitting low and left. But now it's smooth sailing

I just am curious if I am missing something I must have by not having a 9mm

Is a 9mm a must for your arsenal?

It was for me, I had a want for a Belgium made Browning Hi-Power. That weapon is probably older than you and will outlast us all more than likely.

Mine is a Colt in .45, the latest LEO to drag it from under the seat said "at least you have a holster".

It's all personal preference...9s are a lot fun to shoot and ammo is cheap.

At times I carry a Glock 26 with 124 grain Hornady hollows. Love it!

I keep a Springfield XDS 9. I like the capacity and the option to CC. As far as the 40 argument, I'm a tall skinny guy. I can handle a 45 but I can't drive it like a 40. That extra power won't do me any good if I can't put the bullet on the target. With the 40 my accuracy goes way up.

This isn't necessarily true. And if the rounds are comparable and 9mm is edged out by those two, the small difference is not enough to make a difference in the real world.

anyway, my friend who is clearly less knowledgeable than the OB preaches that I need a 9mm, and if I get a cheap car pistol it has to be a 9mm?

Every need is going to be different. I have "something" in all 4 major defense calibers, if you count Mrs. Midnight's .357 revolver.

I have Sig pistols in various calibers - my nightstand is a P229 in .40. I carry either it or a P245 (.45 ACP) to travel. I have a SP2022 for plinking/"just to have something in 9mm".

In your case, I'd get another revolver to carry in the car. Fewer maintenance issues if you're just going to leave it in there. Probably a relative match to your current nightstand gun.

I keep my M&P Shield 9mm neatly between the driver seat and center console/passengers eat of my truck, no holster, great fit.

Also, yes, Texas law requires that the entire gun needs to be completely out of plain sight... Dash and steering column holsters don't cut it here, which is irritating, but also deters it from being stolen

W/o CHL, you can go to and from your home and vehicle with a handgun, but it must remain concealed as soon as you leave your property (not including vehicle) All the CHL does is allow you to take it from your locked car in public. All other rules remain the same.

Never have liked 9mm. I'm comfortable with the 45 and can operate it in my sleep. Never going back unless the technology changes in some unforeseeable way.

I carry Hornady Critical Defense in both of my carry pistols.

I also suggest Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST.

Check out ShootingTheBull410 on YouTube to see his extensive reasoning and testing of specific hollow point rounds.

It does make a difference this is why the army made the decision to drop the 9mm for the 40,45, or sig 357.

45 +p can throw a big piece of lead that the 9mm can not match. These are some big wound channels. The hot 40 loads are head and shoulders above the 9mm rounds as well.

Check out these hot 40 loads:

40 s&w: 135 grains
Muzzle Velocity: 1442 fps
Muzzle Energy: 623 ft. lbs

40 s&w: 155 grains
Muzzle Velocity: 1300 fps
Muzzle Energy: 582 ft. lbs

9mm: 124 +p 124 grains
Muzzle Velocity: 1225 fps
Muzzle Energy: 413 ft. lbs.

9mm: 147 +p 147 grains
Muzzle Velocity: 1125 fps
Muzzle Energy: 414 ft. lbs.

The data you listed is largely immaterial.

Since virtually all SD ammo in 9, 40 and 45 will penetrate to the FBI minimum of 12"' in ballistic gelatin, EXPANSION (after it penetrates the BG) becomes the more important attribute.

The good 9mm bullets will expand to .83 - .85 caliber.
Will your .40 ammo do this ?

Selecting a SD handgun, and choosing caliber and ammo for that weapon, one should also factor in reliability of the gun, expansion of the ammo in a BG, controllability (for rapid, accurate follow-up shots) and capacity (how many BB's does it hold)..

I'd pick a reliable 9mm that holds 18 rounds which will expand to .83 caliber over a .45 ACP that holds 8 rounds which will expand to .99 caliber.

But that's just my $.02 worth.
