Umm. No you don't. It's really easy to get the TL on a non gutted deer

Guess it depends on your definition of gutted. I know people that just quarter the deer and remove the backstrap leaving the abdomen intact.

explain these cuts if you can? I just open the belly a litte and push everything down out of the way

Ive always gutted, to be honest I don't know how to clean a deer without gutting. I split rib cage start at wind pipe and let stomach fall in bucket. It doesn't bother me and not too much of a mess.
