She has been through obedience training and is good when we are around.

That's really what she needs. My email is on the first page if you want to shoot me your contact info and I can give you some more info on myself and her.
I'm not to that point yet. I'm going to try her in the back yard during the day for a week or two then make a decision.

You can't just upgrade the kennel? Hard to break out of a steel cage

Tough spot to be in I'm sure, but I think you are doing the right thing if you can find the proper home. These dogs need tons of attention and exercise. If it's alone I'd say it needs almost slightly more attention then exercise. Certain gsp's need affirmation beyond what you would think is possible, but I've seen it first hand while Others just need to run and could care less about attention.

Let the dog go to a good home where it will be well taken care of and both of you will be relieved.

The 10'x6' Belhen (sp?) kennel sold through tractor supply are top notch and will definitely keep it contained if you want to go the outdoor kennel route.

Try getting a nylon muzzle and giving that a try when you are gone from home...

What's wrong with this option in the first place? My dogs have always stayed outside during the day. WAY better for them than being in a kennel all day. I feel terrible when it's raining and they have to be kenneled all day. Also, look into dog day-care type places. Usually $7-10/day and they get all kinds of exercise and interaction with other dogs. Even bringing your dog once or twice a week should help immensely with the boredom in general.

We did this to our Chocolate Lab. She had anxiety issues bad. She would freak out in the kennel...so we tried the muzzle option to keep her from tearing stuff up. Worked GREAT!

This is a good thing to look into.... Go drop them off at petropolitan and let them play with other dogs. Do it 2-3 Xs a week and if you really enjoy your dog this would more than likely allow you to keep it. Cost is rather low and they take good care of the dogs. I board my GSP there and bring him every now and then to play if I'm going to be busy with work. I say them b/c they are the only ones in town (that I know of) that will board a dog that is in tact.

I hate to hear this. I've been wanting a GSP for some time now, but I'm not ready for one just yet

if you'r serious about this, let me know. I've got a pretty good set up for her (at least the other 4 dogs seem to think so). I ain't promising I'll work her or hunt with her, but she'll have a nice life on acreage, sleep in an air conditioned room at night, live in a covered kennel with a 60" ceiling fan blowing on her and have 4-5 other canine companions to hang around with.

So today is day 1 of keeping her in the back yard while we are gone. So far I've only had to leave work once to fix the latch on the storm door that she broke. We have cameras around the house so I'm able to keep an eye on her. I know it will take some time for her to get used to being back there and I fully expect some scratches on the door and other stuff but if this works in the next couple weeks I'll feel better about being able to keep her.

that was pre-baby and that changes everything

This is the truth. I've got a lab/brittany spaniel mix. I had a big field next to my house that I would work with her in on my lunch hour, she got all of our attention, etc.. Then we had a son and moved to Houston within 3 months of each other. We're in a suburb, small fenced in yard type of house and the baby gets all of the attention. I feel bad for her. The good thing for us is she takes it well. She will go lay in her kennel or on her dog bed. I've been around friends GSP's and they just don't deal with that kind of lifestyle.

I took my dog to the camp for a dove hunt for the first time in over a year. Hadn't worked with her, so didn't take her on the hunt, but it was really hard to see how happy she was running around the fields and retrieving dummies. Just made me realize even more how much she doesn't get to do anymore. Hoping after my son gets the whole walking thing down, they will be able to play together a little more and get her some activity.

And there went the frame to the doggie door that was in the storm door.

Thank you. On my way.
Mine is the definition of separation disorder. She has not left the back door since this morning

yeh man listen to wick.....

that all being said, wick if you know someone who wants one let me know. my breeder has a 4 month old male she is trying to place, but i refuse to send most of these jackasses to her. she will let go as a companion or show pup.... she asked me if i wanted another one.... no way, one a-hole is enough for me

he isn't trained in a hunting sense, but loves the water according to her. she is very picky about who gets her pups.

Want well is a subjective statement
Cost me about $100 for day one. New aluminum doggie door (old one was plastic and she destroyed it) and a nylon muzzle. Oh and the back door needs a new paint job
I'm still not convinced that she won't be able to get this muzzle off but I am hopeful. I did install the new doggie door backwards on the storm door so the slider is on the outside so she can't scratch the main door anymore.
Anyway the wife is working from home tomorrow so we won't have another test run til next week.
