Damn, that's heavier than my Outback.

Anybody prefer a sit in to a sit on yak?

I've got a Native Ultimate 14.5 that weighs around 50lbs. Can fish single or tandem, stable enough to stand up and fish, and flat out flies in the water. I love it, but better stay out of open water in the wind. Not too good with taking waves over the side. Bonus is that I can fit a large ice chest of beer in it while I'm fishing.

Now that's a bare bones yak. How much did that run you? Have you done any customization or just left it as is?

I had always just looked at the sit on tops, as that seems to be the most popular. However, my local outdoors shop had a Jackson Kilroy that I really liked. Now I'm torn.

I'll be getting the FD before anyone else in the state gets one. Hell even massey's hasn't preordered them yet. Hopefully it will be next month. I'm going to post on BCKFC that if anyone wants to test it out they are welcome to. I plan on going to lake ponchartrain one afternoon so people can try it since there aren't any demos.

I think I paid around $1300 brand new for the Ultimate, but you might could find a used one for $1000 or so. Problem is its hard to find a used one, not many people get rid of them. I added a couple of built-in rod holders and some extra gear track, but it had two anchor trolley's come with it. The beauty is you can fit anything in the kayak with you, i.e. ice chests, crates, livewells, whole deer, etc. It's more like a super stable pirogue/canoe.

I tried out the Ultimate on a Saturday at Pack&Paddle. Honestly, I didn't even have that one on my list to test out, but the guy I talked to said he would have one there and should try it because of how I wanted to use it. (able to fish tandem with a kid, use for fishing or hunting, want to be able to stand up and fish) It blew the Jackson Big Tuna, Nucanoe pursuit/frontier out of the water. The Kilroy looks super stable too, but doesn't paddle as fast in the water as the Ultimate.

Interesting and it's made in the USA. I'll have to look into those. How does it handle rapids and fast moving water? Most of what I have to fish around here is small rivers. One more reason I've been looking at a sit in, don't want all my Gear sitting on an open deck.

Ugh.... I would avoid rapids with one of these. It's wide open on top, meaning it will fill up with water and sink. This is made for slow moving water, like small lakes and marsh.

There's nothing wrong with a sit-on-top with gear. Most have access compartments so you can put your gear inside the kayak if you want. Otherwise strap everything down good.

Speaking of which, Pack and Paddle has another big demo day tomorrow(Saturday). I was hoping they'd have a Jackson FD in time but no such luck.

This is what attracted me to the Slayer. I generally go on shortish trips. If it is something that would get put inside the kayak, I don't need it. I try to bring as little as possible with me.

Now they do make aftermarket skirts/covers for the ultimate if you're concerned about gear getting loose or water splashing into the hull. To me though, that is not appealing to fishing in the marsh. I'd rather open space to be able to quickly grab/place any gear/beer from the deck.

Pack and Paddle doesn't carry Jackson for some unknown reason. So Massey's has taken advantage of it.

Sorry, I was thinking Backpacker. No one can get the FD yet. Late June or July now.

Has anyone tried the thermomolded Native with the propel drive? If so, likes and dislikes and how easy to stand up while on it?

Really interested in a lighter pedal style kayak.

Thernomolds in general are very light, but you have to handle them with kid gloves. They don't hold up anywhere near like a solid mold. I don't know how they track but if I had to guess not as good as standard quality yaks.

Kind of makes you wonder if they're having issues with the Flex Drive. Or are they waiting for ICAST?
