For anyone interested, there's another HERPS reptile show at the Alario Center on the Westbank on Aug. 5-6th. Another hot show, so there will be venomous snakes again.

Also an update - the box turtle I posted a month ago is still eating my squirrel food every morning. I covered up a hole under my fence that was big enough for my dog to fit through, and that might have been the turtle's only means of exit. But since he eats every morning then treks back across the yard to hide under my shed, I'll leave him to his pattern for now. The squirrel food is mostly sunflower seeds and peanuts, so I guess he is eating the peanuts. When I'm up early enough to see him chowing down, I defrost a few blackberries from my freezer and give them to him. Also bought some tortoise food pellets that I put out for him.

Saw 35 baby timber rattlers and 3 of the postpartum mothers. This was last Saturday in east central Georgia.

Awesome. I've yet to find babies. Maybe I'll go out looking soon.

It's time for babies for sure. It's always a couple weeks earlier than I expect. I see baby horridus every year at the spot I posted above. It's strange because it's a piedmont locale, but the gestating rattlers are there every year as they would be at a mountain rookery site.

I found a neonate racer today at work....inside.

Everyone seems to be finding juvie racers. I've been specifically looking for them and haven't found one yet this year. I have a fantasy of captive breeding them and making them more popular as pets.

These pics turned out bigger than I thought they would, but here are some from this summer in W Georgia.

Gopher Tortoise.

Dusky Pygmy.

Eastern Coachwhip.

Another Dusky Pygmy. This one was almost certainly gravid.

Nice pigs and gopher. Are you up in the Sandhills near Columbus or further south?

I herp around Buena Vista and Butler a lot but never see pigmies there. Lots of timbers and occasionally a diamondback, but never Sistrurus. I knew there were some Chattahoochee County records. I see lots of pigmies near Athens though.

Thanks for sharing.

Now I haven't seen or heard of any Diamondbacks being seen here. I haven't seen one since I left South Carolina. You've seen them in this area?

I believe we were in Chatahoochee with the duskies, but the gopher was in Muscogee.

There is an isolated population of diamondbacks in that part of the GA Sandhills. They can be pretty common in Taylor, Talbot, and Marion counties. So maybe a touch east of where you are at. There are a lot of pine snakes around you as well.

Edited to say I've only seen diamondbacks in Taylor county, but they are certainly in Talbots and Marion as well.

That's a brave hold. I've handled venomous before, but grabbing one of those small frickers is at the bottom of my list. Just seems far too tricky to get a good hold on, and I'd be worried about hurting it while pinning. Awesome pics.

I've had a couple batches of baby racers (black-masked) but harbored no dreams of domesticating them. When I was a kid my uncled hatched a bunch and gave us over a dozen babies. We threw them all together in a 10 gallon tank in our bedroom. On several occasions we'd walk in and find one swallowing another. We'd shake them til they regurgitated their siblings, then go rinse off the dazed and confused brethren til they revitalized. Had around a half dozen escape one night - found one in my sisters shoe, one in my mom's bathroom, etc. That put an end to that venture.
I found 18 eggs under a log once and hatched them. 14 of them hatched and they turned out to be racers. Didn't incubate or anything, just put them in a bucket of soil and stuck it in the laundry room where it stayed warmer, and just kept it moist. Ended up donating the babies to the refuge that was by Joe Brown Park in N.O. East years ago.

Nice finds, everyone. I haven't seen much lately. I did run across this rat snake last week. Maybe I can get out and do some nighttime road cruising in the near future.

Something I've noticed with these pygmies is that they're not very squirmy. Carolina pygmies are fairly common around Charleston, and they seem to give up when handled, just like these did. Nothing like a racer or coachwhip.
But, yes, I know she would have happily bitten me if given a chance!

That's a great pic.

Gray rats in your area?

We've got the grays here, but blacks in Clemson and yellows in Charleston. What an amazing snake.

Yes, I think they're calling them "gray rats" again now. At one point, they were classified as "midland rat snakes" which I think is probably a better term. I believe, in this area, they're really intergrades between true grays and blacks.
