Came across this fatty at work yesterday. Largest moccasin I've seen in the wild. It was in the middle of lunch on an amphiuma. Amphiuma was about 14" long and maybe 3/4" thick.

This little dude has been raiding my squirrel food every morning lately. I put squirrel food (i.e., squirrel bait) out because my dog likes to chase squirrels. Saw him out there a few days ago and my dog yapped at him for a while so I moved him under the shed. Every morning he's been back bright and early. Gave him a few bonus blackberries this morning.

Not a herp, but I'll toss in this bonus arachnid.

Her death my fire brings the body count to an even dozen in the past week. Had not seen any since last year, and suddenly every couple days I have a new 4-6 setting up shop on my back patio.

Awesome racer your kids have there! Thought at first it was a blue racer - around my place north of Lake Pontchartrain we have black racers, and where I grew up on the south shore we had black-masked racers exclusively. Though we grew up incorrectly calling them blue runners. Was just googling pics and realized that's an eastern yellow bellied racer - I didn't know that was a thing! And congrats on the kids who can enjoy the outdoor life without the need of a shovel like most of the "outdoorsMEN" around here.

The racers around here are the meanest SOBs I've ever encountered. My first Buttermilk struck at me before I was 5 feet from him.

How cool to have that boxer hanging around like that!

And I think that is a brown widow...not as bad as black and more common I believe. I see them often around my place...only 2 blacks so far.

Yeah, it's definitely a Brown Widow. Every summer I get them around my back patio, but this past week has been unreal with 12 of them. I see the occasional black widow - even had one build a web in the corner ceiling of my game room once. The brown widows are always low to the ground - their webs usually run from the window sill to the ground (low window sills about a foot or two off the ground). Sometimes they are between a window and the screen.

My Dad sent me a picture of this corn snake that he saw on his back patio. I made him catch it so I could add it to my collection. Great color.

Snakes of Louisiana

Thought this was a good article regarding snakes and habitat in LA. Posting so that people can use it later on.

A Boa and Tigre snake, both pretty good sized. In the mountainous area of north Trinidad. Good sized tarantulas on the night walk as well.

Went to a reptile show yesterday, and it was the first "hot " show I've been to. Lots of good stuff - Gaboon Vipers for $125, Puff Adders for $75, regular and albino Monacled Cobras from $125-225...They also had a couple Green Mambas, a Forrest Cobra, Green Tree Vipers...I thought the venomous specimens would be under lock and key, but nope - there's a Green Mamba in a small plastic container sitting right on the table with kids poking at it. I wanted to snatch up a baby Gaboon Viper so freaking bad, but the price didn't include a divorce attorney. Gaboons are just the most amazing creatures. I've kept snakes in the house before, but the wife wants no part of a Gaboon. If they had an Eyelash Viper there, I don't think I could have resisted the urge though.

I realize I'm a little late to this thread but wanted to add to it. I took my two oldest daughters to this show mentioned above and they had a blast. Here's some pics of the venomous ones mentioned:

Here's some other pics from that show as well.

Each of the girls holding a Blue Eyed Lucy. I was so close to buying one but I know my wife wouldn't have been happy with getting it without her knowing ahead of time.

Here's a Banana Spinner along with a very cheesy grin:

Here's both of the girls with a Royal (Regular) Ball Python:

Needless to say, they were among the very few girls there. They absolutely love everything about snakes, and reptiles in general. I think if you teach them at a young age that not all snakes are harmful, they wont end up deathly afraid of just about any snake they see like half the board here haha.

Going to bump this thread:

A pretty large (compared to the others I have encountered in my yard) Southern Leopard Frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus).

An Eastern Mud Turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum)that I helped across the highway.

What I believe is a Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris) spotted hanging out at the condo while I vacationed in Florida.

Edit to add:

I don't have any pictures, but, while on the above mentioned vacation, there was a small-ish Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) foraging just off the beach most of the first day we were there. (Loggerhead was my best guess based on behavior and color. It was between that or Kemp's ridley, but it didn't really have the dark color of the ridleys I've seen.)

ive been trying to figure it out all day. the snake is closer to the eye of the hook so one would think it got hooked first (i use live bait), but logic says snake would try to eat catfish.
