I go to lake bill Waller in Columbia all the time. Actually going tomorrow and may throw a bass bug if the bream aren't biting. I know there aren't any fly shops around here, if you wanna go I'll give you a few bugs

I love those Clearwater rods too. A mahi broke mine in the keys, need to send it back to orvis.

If you have a small boat or kayak, some of the best bass fishing in Mississippi is in the creeks and smaller rivers. Not sure which ones are around Hattiesburg, but you should be able to find them on a map or by just driving around. Just don't be scared of water moccasins.

Side note my tools and stuff I ordered came yesterday. Very impressed with the dr slick razor scissors, they don't push hair around at all. I also recommend not ordering from a place called "feather craft" in St Louis. They never sent me a shipping notification, and some of my stuff was back ordered, i received no notification other than a note in the package that did come. No idea when that will get here. /rant

You have or should have some lead and other types fo wire for tying. The lead you can twist off easily but some will still cut it. Do NOT use your Dr Slick scissors for this. Get some cheap ones for the rough stuff.

Yeah, I've got my bass pro scissors that I'll use for anything with wire or that doesn't require a precise cut. Also got a Fugly Hair Packer, this thing is massive and can't wait to try it out on some bass bugs.

LINK

Took a buddy and his friend from Oregon out this weekend. The dude had never fished Louisiana before. Smashed redfish all weekend then caught a sheepy .

Saw a new Cayo skiff in Dularge Monday. Really really nice boat but I don't like the oversized spray rails all the boat builders are building into the hulls. Guy told me he's gonna be bass fishing out of it a lot as well.

IDGAF how they look if they keep me dry. The 17' Cayo boats have a steep bow rake and they're super narrow. They need those big spray rails to cross any kind of chop while staying dry.

Yeah first thing I noticed was the beam. I think they're around 64" or maybe less. I'm curious to see the specs on the 180. Really nice fit and finish for the price point. Not sure I'd want to wait a year for a boat though.

62" beam. I dig the integrated spray rails. Narrow, but looks like an easy one to pole. I don't understand why people put consoles in them being that narrow, but if you pay the dime you get to rig it like you want.

Yeah I'd go side console. I'm not generally a fan of tiller handles. I really like the new BT Mosquito and owners are raving about them. Also reading great things about the EvoX from EC. Different style boats but both badass nonetheless.

This, my sterling is super wet, Big spray rails help knock down 80% of that.

The Fury's rails are big and they do a good job. I can't run 35mph in 2 footers, but anything under that, I'm dry at a reasonable speed.

Going to 30a this weekend (and again is a couple weeks) and would like to mess around with a fly rod in the surf for a few minutes before everyone starts to wake up. I realize I'll just catch some lady fish and whiting but hey, if it tugs the line then I'm game.

What would be a good setup for something like this? I've seen folks recommend 8 or 9 wt rods, but that seems a lot for a little fish. Or is it more for casting distance? Thoughts. Anyone else played around on the fly down there

Thanks

I brought my fly rod every year we went down there (10+). Mornings (and evenings) are definitely the key in my experience. I generally just used clousers, either pink or chartreuse. I've used both my 6 wt and 8 wt (I usually rigged one with a sink tip for "trolling" out of a kayak). As you indicated, the reach of the 8 weight is the main advantage. A 6 wt is enough rod for anything that you're likely to catch, though.

I usually rigged 10 inches or so of bite tippet (just a really heavy mono) as well because you run into blues and Spanish on occasion. I also carried some wire leader just in case I got into a real school of blues and the bite tippet wasn't sufficient.

Going to blue ridge, ga and have a cabin in toccoa river

For a beginner fly setup... Is that LL bean setup worth snatching? It's for around 140.00

I'm going to do bring light weight spinning tackle but would love a fly rod setup for 150.00 like LL bean is offering

I have the bass pro or I guess white river beginner setup that was like $100 if you want to save a few bucks for flies. It works just fine for the waters in that area.

Bass Guys -

What is a standard duty bass tippet size?

I had my first bass on the fly Friday evening on a popper (nothing big) but when it nailed it, we got into a pulling match and he snapped the shite out of that 4x tippet. Damn near made me sick but its just a little neighborhood pond.
