It really is sick man. It's not mine though...it's my old man's. He lets me use it when he's not fishing with me, so it works out. It's my favorite 8wt I've ever thrown.

OK i'll look into some things later today. Others can chime in.
Side note. dendiscounts has a fantastic deal on a TFO BVK - 6wt for $150! LINK

Ok so I went to my father in laws pond Sunday and played around with his fly rod. It was, to say the least, ugly and a little discouraging. I tried doing some of the things I watched on Orvis' YouTube channel but I think I tried to skip the basic cast without properly learning it. I think at one point I was trying the double haul. I got so much line out and it got to the point where I couldn't get it all back in the air and then I wasn't able to even hook a tiny perch despite their aggressive strikes. To the point where I wanted to give up pursuing fly fishing.
Before I buy anything, will Orvis let me do their lessons? Do they charge you if you're buying something or is it just a class that you pay for independent of any purchases? How often are the classes? Anything else I can do?

I decided to switch to Airflo's Ridge Tropical clear tip
I have the Airflo Ridge bonefish/redfish line on my 8wt Mangrove. I haven't had the knotting/tangling issue that you experienced. It does hold kinks though. I have been pretty pleased with the line but have been wanting to try something else out.

I've done the 101 and 201 and it was helpful. You also get some pretty sweet discounts at the end.

Stick with it - learn the basics and forget about anything like a double haul.
Work on short simple casts, roll casts until you can gently drop a line on your target that is no more than 20 ft away. Get into a class if possible.
What you're experiencing is one of many reasons you see fly fishermen take so much pride in the fish they catch. It aint easy.

You most likely had too much line out and tried to cast too far to start.
Start out with 10ft of line out.
Start your backcast.
Let the line lay flat behind you but keep your rod pointed straight up.
start your forward cast.
Do that a few times.
Pull out a little more line and do the same.
Make sure you hold onto the loose line off the reel in your off hand.
Reel a little line in and make a backcast. Wait for it to straighten out to the back (while your rod tip is still pointed up) when you feel a slight tug start your forward cast.

Every now and then I guess you have to get skunked - that was today on the east branch of the Delaware. A river known for being tough - oh well. Scenery was nice and I got to watch two bald eagles for a long time.

Hey Barf, is your friend selling that Ankona that is listed on the kayak site? I am really interested in it since I sold my kayak, I just have no idea what I am looking at, never even rode on a poling skiff.

Probably. Hit him up and ask. It's a cool little boat.

Are those photos working for yall? They don't show up on my screen. I host with Amazon prime so maybe it won't let me link them.
Also, I'm gonna post a report on here, but if anyone is interested in actual spots down there, post your email and I'll send you a full report and info. The spots get enough blast online and everything is accessible by car, so I'd rather keep it off the google superhighway.
