plenty of food (weiners, buns, debbie cakes, marshmellows, variety pack of tater chips, jerkey, peanuts)
plenty of drinks
lighter wood
air mattress
cig lighter
axe/hatchet
thermocell
flashlights
bug spray
tent
sleeping bags
any condiments kids will need (we just take bbq sauce)
paper plates
paper towels
germex
knife
depends on where you are going (grill, tin foil, propane tank, fish cooker)
plastic forks/spoons
cooking oil and corn mill if frying fish
Yep, definitely two tents. One for the kids and the other for you and the SO.

if you're bringing cell phone external battery packs are pretty useful for keeping your phone charged up...

You didn't mention whether or not it was primitive or have hook ups. We take 2 100 ft 20 amp extension cords for electric blankets, electronics, electric chainsaw, and a bug light for near the campfire.
Wife and I use coleman 10 man cabin. Perfect for 2 people.
25 foot hose
Cots
Coleman stove
Luggable loo, trash bags and cat litter
Headlamps
Butt wipes//handi wipes, tp.
Doritos make good fire starters
Therma cell
Spray tent with permethrin > lasts 40ish days.
Store food not in ice chest in your vehicle.
Clean up food and trash immediately after eating.

No offense, but you and your electronics and chainsaw are why I avoid drive in sites at all costs
Good suggestion about permethrin.

We keep the chainsaw to a minimum
We need the chargers for our phones...for geocaching, which is something to keep the kids entertained.
Also fire extinguisher...in case my electric blankey catches on fire.

I think tent stakes and a few pieces of tubular would work. Mine was only $13 though.
It's nice because it packs up and is light. When we would do offroad camping trips I would only bring the bare essentials. My hammock tent packs up small and ice chest takes up my entire bed.
Beer is the most essential item for my camping.

I'll have to try that out. Never heard of doing that.

I think you're a glamper.

What hammock do you use? I have a problem and acquire more gear than any man needs, so I've got quite a few but by far my most used hammock is my Warbonnet Blackbird.

Personally, I'd get an inexpensive Coleman at Walmart, then upgrade after you get some experience. Everyone has their own little quirks, and half the fun is learning what works and what doesn't. It's amazing what being out in the wild does to your McGuyver instincts .
Also make sure everyone has the 10 essentials, just to be safe.

Most cheap tents don't come with a full rain fly. I find that necessary with the amount of rain we get in Louisiana.
After watching my friend's tent fill with water from rain one night, I felt like I made a good investment on my $400 tent.

Couple things that I haven't seen mentioned that I use.
Dutch oven
Propane tank and distribution post. Covers your stove, lantern, and something else you may hook up.

If you get a propane stove and like coffee, Coleman makes a great drip coffee pot like you use at home. I prefer that to the percolator. The stove top version is 30 to 50 bucks. You need a thermos to keep warm after brewing. They also make a self contained version that does not need a stove but it is over $100.

Forgot to mention, primative as possible. No chain saws, no propane.

So dutch oven and old bbq grill grate.
Even primitive camping I take my propane, just easier. I also do a lot of real primitive camping so I like to enjoy certain things like a lantern

Since weight isn't an issue I think this is a must have. We usually make spaghetti, fajitas, fried fish on it. I always love being at a campground and having trout/sheepshead fish tacos while our neighbors are eating hot dogs. Plus you can use it at home for power outages/ hurricanes.

I always like having a sun shower bag like this. For showering but also good for cleaning stuff. The bag doesn't weigh much.

I was thinking about doing this soon also. My boy turns 7 in July and I will probably buy a tent soon. My first adventure will be in my backyard and go on from there. I can always go on my dad's property and be close to home if it gets too miserable.
We use to camp out when I was in high school. One night my buddy took his dad's 25 pistol. We were bull-eyeing rabbits and couldn't hit them from 3 feet away.
