I think he could make hats for an entire hillbilly baseball team.
He has more than a dozen others in the picking/tanning pipeline, as well as yet a dozen more hides in the freezer awaiting their turn in cue for processing. There's no telling how many dozen he's already given away.
He gives pelts to his siblings and peers as gifts. At that age, it's a super-neat gift that kids covet.
Aside from gifts, frankly I'm at a loss for what to do with them. He just loves the tanning process, and has gotten damn good at it.

Maybe you're thinking of a coon and the glands on those. Never heard of having to take them out of squirrels.
So, note to self......an enterprising young man has figured out for us that a cheap bag of birdseed can yield the "Berkshire" of squirrel meat. Sounds like a fair trade to me

I have a new mission for this fall. Bait squirrels all summer near a big feeder. Remove feeder for the first week of the season. Profit.

I would do this but with my luck all it would attract would be hogs

That's awesome! We raise longhorns that have beautiful hides, I would love to learn how to tan one.

What I really like about this VanDyke's outfit is that they have taxidermists on staff to consult for free via a 1-800 number.
The boy just calls them up whenever he has a detail question.
The kit I linked you to is a water-soluble set more suitable for kids. They have a full line of professional supplies as well. I can't over-emphasize how great their customer service is. Without a doubt the most bang-for-the-buck gift I've ever bought for a kid.

I'm going to look into this. Knowing other breeders they all say it's more trouble than it's worth, and a professional will charge out the arse for the service. It's cheaper just to go buy a hide from a retailer.
That's not the point. I want to do one myself...
Thanks man.

I've been eating squirrel for many a moon, and I have to admit that I've never heard of anything to do with glands on a squirrel.

Being outsmarted by a little kid has been a regular occurrence since he was 4-years old.
My 4 yr old had me hiding outside in his treehouse with him last weekend trying to shoot the coon thats raiding Mom's birdfeeders.

When I was at LSU, we had this gigantic pecan tree in the yard of the duplex we leased. The squirrels lived in it and they got soo bad they chewed their way into the ventilation system of the house a few times haha we got fed up with hearing them running inside the walls so we resorted to shooting them. We started cooking them and they were awesome, especially in gumbo. Everybody thought we were nuts to be eating gray squirrels right out the tree, but with them eating a steady diet of pecans, they tasted pretty damn good. All the squirrels I had before were not as good as these. I do agree a good diet for them makes them much more delicious haha
Oh, and like others have said, your son is a little BAMF haha Sounds like a young version of me and my friends growing up.

That's awesome Coastie. One of my favorite parts of being a dad is watching my son pull stunts like this.

A few years ago we were at my wife's grandparents at Christmas. Her grandpa owns a bunch of land, and all the squirrels were messing with his gardening and a bunch of other stuff. Getting into attics, chewing up wires, and who knows what else. He pulls out a pair of shotguns and a couple boxes of shells and hands one to me and one to the other adult that was his grandkid. We took the young guys out with us and shot squirrels for a couple of hours. If I had known, I would have brought my A-5 light 12 with me and the sweet sixteen for the teenagers to use. I think we ended up killing about 40 of them. One of the kids made a big pile of them and took pictures but we never counted. We ended up leaving to head back to Birmingham that night so I don't know what they ended up doing with them, but someone mentioned dinner.

FishFighter's earlier mention of glands on a squirrel really piqued my interest. Apparently it's true.
Did some research and came up with this...
I guess it's never been an issue with me because I cut the leg above that joint anyway.
God bless the OB....learn something all the time.

Are those the glands on the legs there right at the words?

There is also some tan colored lymph tissue in the armpit that we have always removed. Been doing it that almost 50 yrs.

Any tips / insights?
They have glands in the neck, so cut it at the shoulders. Spread the leg outward, pass a knife to open it more. The gland is a dark tan color.
All tree rats have them in the same place.
