The question always comes up this time of year. Not looking for a "whatever is cheapest" answer thread, but more technical discussion.

In the past I've always shot 1 oz. 7.5 shot, usually cheap Winchester White box, Estate, or whatever.

This year I'm going to try out 1 1/8 in both 7.5 and 8 shot and see what I prefer. Probably Remington ShurShot Heavy Dove on sale for $5.99 a box at Academy right now.

This is the best load IMO. the 1 1/8 is the key in any brand. Don't get the cheap 7/8 oz lead, just does get that full pattern coverage, but you should be good with the 1 1/8oz loads.

You chose wisely with the Sure Shot Heavy. I prefer the #8's myself. you can't beat that price at Academy either.

Winchester AA's and Remington Nitro's 1-1/8 7.5 shot. Reloadable hulls, quality shot, etc.

Remington ShurShot doves and gun clubs after that.

The fastest 7/8 Oz load I can find at a reasonable price. Monarch wins this year.

Winchester Super Sport Sporting Clays 3-1/4 Dram Eq. Powder and 1-1/8oz #9 shot.
Screw in a Skeet or Cylinder tube. Point barrel in the general direction he's heading and pull the trigger.

Caution: Set gun down while looking for dead birds or you'll continue shooting and end up with so many doves you can't find them all.

I like using #6. Yesterday had some guys near me asking what load I was shooting expecting to hear I paid for some high brass shells. #6 carries farther and hits harder IMO.

Going after whitewings this weekend so the #6 will help in bringing those big SOB's down.

Does anyone remember when you used to get a discount for buying a case of ammo?

Rio 7.5

This.

The following comments are true for my shotgun/choke combo. Might not be true for your setup.

1 ounce, 1210 ft/sec #7.5 Rio loads break clay targets at distances beyond those at which that I'd shoot at a dove (50 yards). The #7.5's retain more energy than the smaller pellets do.

The 1 ounce, 1210 ft/sec loads will generally pattern better (in my gun) than the 1-1/8 and definitely pattern better (in almost any gun) than the high velocity loads.

On a similar note "Technoid" wrote this in SportingClays USA:
"Just remember that, all things being equal, the faster the load, the more open the pattern. The high speed and abrupt start damage more pellets than a leisurely shell. Damaged pellets are less likely to stay in the pattern. If you are going to use high velocity loads for your long shots, always buy the highest quality you can afford."

Here's a link to a similar thread at ShotgunWorld.com Granted, they're talking about clay targets, but I think the principles are the same for doves: LINK

Obviously YMMV
