Yes it can be done, we have chummed some up with a chum-churn and drug crankbaits through the chum with some success. Smaller fish mind you (8-10lbs.)but it was a blast. You will either be highy successful or not at all for some reason though. We have never tried to blind cast though.

I never caught any red snapper on crank baits but have slain the mangroves with chrome rattletraps around the 7 mile rigs out of fourchon. I chummed them up and started casting.
Btw bring lots of traps they are rough on them lol

Speaking of bow fishing, when a lemon comes up following a lemon on a pole, we shoot it!

I wonder if there could be a market for lipless or a metal lipped, solid dense wood, drilled and filled with lead, deep water crankbait for pelagic species.

I'm thinking it would have to have through body crimped stainless wire line to hook attachments instead of screw in hook eyelets and of course saltwater trebles.

I think you would have a hard time getting it past the Almaco jacks, mangrove snapper etc at the surface before you could get it down to the snapper. I would think you could sight cast it at red snapper after they follow up one that was hooked further down. I also think a lemon fish would tag it but i doubt it survives more than a few fish. Offshore species are hell on tackle.

I've caught both snapper and kings on topwater behind a shrimp boat tied off to a rig. Talk about fun!

I would be completely ok with that. Almaco and mangos are great eating.

Best part about using those stretch baits for grouper and snapper is that if you get hung up on the structure, the bait typically floats back up to the top and you can reuse it. Its a good feeling when you see a 20 lure floating on the surface.

Think it would help to weight it down with a 1 or 2oz egg sinker? I know guys that throw crankbaits on carolina rigs for bass to get them down deep, so this would be the same idea.

Don't give me stupid crazy ideas. I'm a sucker for those. Dammit now I have to convince my brother to strap a yak to the boat. Hmm....

Although I have caught a grouper from a kayak on a jerkbait... Does that count? Hah.
