Re: bugs
My lightest shelter is a Coghlan 2 person bug net with nylon sewed on for a floor. I stretch a cord between 2 trees, hang the bug net from it and drape the rain fly off my 5 person Walmarttent. The whole system weighs 1.5lbs. If I were to do it again, I'd trim the bottom off the net and use Velcro to save that weight. Whole set up cost$40. 20 for net one 20 for material. If you or SO sew, you can get tulle and make your own. I use the rain fly cuz I already have it but you could use a tarp or visqueen.

Used to tent camp a lot. Still tent camp occasionally; especially out to Cumberland Island off the coast of GA. For that I use a foam pad. It's a mattress topper that I trimmed some and it's damned comfortable. And Thermacell when the bugs are bad is a must.

We did upgrade to this and use it a ton:

I sleep on a cheap thin foam mat. Cheap coleman tent. Camp once a month. Thinking about getting a hammock for warm weather. I hate tents just don't have a good sleeping bag to sleep outside right now.

Only time I slept without an air mattress when car camping was when my husband forgot the air mattress. I literally was not a happy camper that weekend.

Yep, I backpack. If you can walk a mile, you can get away from 90% of the crowds, even in the most popular areas.

Depends on the type of camping I'm doing. I actually have 3 different tents. If I'm car camping someone, I bring my giant tent and sleep on a queen air mattress. For backpacking and canoeing, I have a little self-inflating pad. It gives you a small amount of padding, some insulation, and it doesn't take up a bunch of room.

Hennesey Hammock. I sleep in mine year-round. In the summer I can sleep in my underwear and a t-shirt with a light sheet. In the winter I put my mummy bag in it and stay warm.

I should note these are Louisiana,Mississippi, an Arkansas winters. Coldest I've tried in it was 20 degrees or so.

Does that have the rain fly built in or separate.

Last time we went we got soaked, buddy's tent apparently had a hole in it.
Buying one of these if I ever go again.

Unfortunately, I'm getting there and a back injury in my 20's bugs me still. Considering I don't camp just once in awhile so I need a comfortable surface.

I usually don't use it, unless it's raining. The whole thing, hammock and fly, pack up in a bag the size of a half loaf of bread. Mine stays in my truck. The mosquito net and the way the entrance seals up keep all the bugs out. I slept in mine with my 3 yr old daughter on my chest for a couple nights and slept fine. I actually sleep better in my hammock than in my $2000 bed at home.

I sleep better on my thermarest than I do at home but I think it's because I'm just outdoors. My pad is comfy as hell though.

I've heard folks say the hammock will get your back feeling good. Got plenty of camping with the kids this summer coming up, I'm going to try one out.

I don't know anyone who has said they didn't absolutely love sleeping in a hennesey, the cat's arse of hammocks.

I'm gonna have to look into this hammock thing. I've tent camped quite a bit when I was a teenager, but not so much since hitting adulthood. I miss it. This has made me want to plan a trip with the kids.

When camping, I generally sleep on a bottle of Jack.

Only thing with the hammock is make sure you have enough rope/rigging to reach around trees that may be big or to far apart. I'm sure with experience you will figure out what to bring. I might hit the backpacker next week and see what they have in hammocks.
