It's one thing I did not teach my kids, but I will let them learn if I ever get another vehicle with it.

I learned to drive in a Toyota truck with four on the floor and also had to drive a Chevy truck that had 3 on the column for my first job (delivering appliances).

I'll never drive a column shifter again, but I like a stick-shift in small trucks, jeeps and sporty cars.

Why? What are the advantages of driving a stick shift unless you own one.

I haven't driven a stick in several years, but could pick it back up in a few minutes. Also, it's not like it's hard, people make out like driving a manual is something on par with climbing Everest. Everybody should know how, it's one of those skills they may come in handy one day.

<--------can drive a standard

I learned how to drive on one, and I've had 3 cars with manual transmissions. I hope my kids have the opportunity to learn, but manuals are getting harder to find. My brother recently bought a used car and it took him a while to find the one he wanted in a standard.

My youngest was 12 and could work a stick in a Miata better than most adult drivers. Many young people will never learn how or need to know how......

Pontiac didn't have big blocks. They had one.

There are big blocks and small blocks, but almost all Pontiac engines between 326-455ci are the same size externally. So the 400 is just a 400ci Pontiac big bore engine, it is not a small block or a big block despite common belief.

Can't stand seeing someone buy an awesome sports car with a fricking automatic. It is SO much more gratifying to have that extra level of control. When it's mastered, it is very rewarding.

It's definitely sad to see manuals disappear. Just more computers taking the fun out of the extra work.

Agreed.

It disappoints me when I see a grown man who can't drive a standard.

I learned as a kid on a dirtbike. By the time I was 12, I had no problem driving the Jeep.

I hadn't ever driven one. My parents showed up with a 5 speed Tacoma and said here you go. I taught myself

For a street/strip car it doesn't matter. Automatics are tougher, more consistent, and easier on the engine and drivetrain. A manual valvebody in reverse pattern is plenty fun too.

What's sad is even 18-wheelers are starting to have automatics. The company I work for bought a freightliner that can haul 50,000 lbs I get in the cab to move it and it didn't even have a shifter at all, just thee buttons R,N,D!
