WASHINGTON (CBS News) -- A group of nine senators on Tuesday unveiled a bipartisan compromise aimed at keeping guns out of terrorists' hands in the wake of the June 12 Orlando shooting.
The legislation spearheaded by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, would prohibit people on the government's no-fly list and the government's selectee list used for extensive screening at airports from purchasing a gun.
The bill would allow U.S. citizens and green-card holders to appeal a decision blocking his or her purchase of a firearm, and if successful, to be awarded attorney's fees. It also contains a look-back provision so that if anyone has appeared in the government's broad terrorism database over the last five years, the FBI would be immediately notified if they attempt to buy a gun.
"Our goal is simple and straightforward: We want to make America safer," Collins said at a press conference unveiling the proposal, which she said "would help keep guns out of the hands of terrorists."
The total number of people on the watch lists under the legislation totals 109,000, Collins said, and most of them are foreign nationals. ...

It's always nice to see people assumed to be guilty until proven innocent.

Yeah, there should probably be a court involvement for someone to be put on the list.

Go buy a bunch of guns before you hit it!

And there's no way they could ever make a mistake or put you on that list out of spite, right?

Well, the compromise allows you to appeal the decision. It'll even pay your attorney fees if you win.

Are you saying that a government employee could frick up at his/her/its job or just be a generally shitty person? I don't believe it.

You can do that under the current law.

I believe this is the only change.

Seems like common sense legislation. Good for them.

Appeal literally any government decision and get back to me. I mean the government is very quick and easy to deal with.
I just think it's hilarious that people are that willing to concede the right of an American citizen to own a firearm without any sort of trial or proof of guilt.

I know. Hard to imagine, huh?
I mean, the Obama admin never did anything like use the IRS as a weapon against certain groups, right?

The problem is that the list is completely arbitrary and you have no way of even knowing you're on it. And with anything government-related, expect it to take way too long to get yourself off of it, especially with the scary "terrorist" moniker.
It's like these people honestly think they can control straw purchases, which will be happening until the end of time. Can't buy a gun because you can't pass the check? Have a family member do it for you...

How long do you anticipate that to take? And how much taxpayer money is this just going to burn? Bureaucracy ain't cheap.

It's more likely that the same Judges/DA that are letting repeat offenders off without sexual registration will be able to control who ends up on this list too.
Have an issue with it? Take the federal government to court and pray you don't have to defend your family until it's settled.
Hope you baws all have the guns you need because we are probably all going on the list after these threads.

This such bullshite. Taking away rights of Americans while giving illegals a free pass.

Our government thinks everyone is a terrorist. Gonna be a lot of guns lost in boating accidents.

What's to say that someone in the government t arbitrarily decides that the NRA is a terrorist organization? Obama has already pretty much called its members that. Or any other organization for that matter

So let's just go ahead and deny, without due process first, all the other rights guaranteed under the Constitution and then make our citizens have to go to court to have them restored afterwards. Idiots and knee jerkers!
