Say a deer's vital area is 15" that's a solid 300-400yd deer killer.

It'll kill any deer you can see, but when compared to modern bolt rifles, its just not as accurate.

My .308 is a wood safari. The 7 is the synthetic. .308 is slightly more accurate, but the synthetic wins out for muddy, nasty conditions, and I like the 7mm ballastics. The 7 will shoot 1in moa at 100 yds, so hunting accuracy is not a factor. That being said, I have not had either rifle fail on deer if I do my part.

M1a and Browning Bar. Both rifles are just fun to shoot.

My dad shoots a newish ~10yr old Remington 30-06. Im not a huge fan of it. Its heavier than my bolt action and has jammed more than once on me at the range.

I've got an old H&K 770 in .308 that is one of the best rifles I've ever fired.

My dad used a 740 all his adult life and I don't ever remember him missing a deer. Later, after he got an SKS, he shot a couple with that. same result.

Korean war vet. He could flat-out shoot.

Meh not talking bout AR's

Unless you're gonna be doing a lot of walking, a good AR-10 in .308 is an outstanding semi-auto. But they are heavy (or at least mine is).

Mine is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. (I don't claim to be any good as a bench rest shooter, so I count 1/2 MOA as pretty good when I'm shooting a rifle.)

Assuming you already have an AR-15, the extra benefit is a common manual of arms.
