Honestly any one of them would be a great first rifle. But if I were to rank them I would go
308
30-06
243
I say 308 first because it is a current military round and ammo is cheapest with wider selection. I put 30-06 and 308 ahead of 243 because the larger caliber can take bigger game. 243 will kill just about anything in the state of Louisiana.

Just picked up a 30-06 before work. Great deal. Appreciate the heads up!

I stopped at the one on 90 in broussard and they dont even sell guns other than BB. I was wanting to get a .308 in a rem 700 so I can get the magpul hunter stock...but damn 199 is almost too good to pass up.

Anyone shoot the Ruger American? Has a good trigger for the price, especially at $200 . Seems like a well built rifle. Interested to see how accurate it is.

Great gun for that price. Tack driver. Stock is a lil light. Fill the cavity behind pad wt silicone.

I'm gonna go see if Wally World in Kenner has any at lunch. That's a frickin steal in any caliber.

I googled "ruger clearance at Walmart". a thread from a different website popped up from last August. The Ruger Americans were $188 last year. I wonder if they have gun clearances every August.

Heading to the range at lunch to zero my scope. Quick bore cleaning and a little lube on the bolt is as much as I've done to it so far. Besides mounting the Voretex Crossfore II 4-12x44 and investing in some Leupold rings.
My trigger was great out of the box. I don't see a need to fiddle with it at all. Would guess around 3lbs at the break. Perfect for me.
Two complaints. Cocking effort is a little greater than I would like. Lets see if it loosens up with use. Stock feels like it was designed for iron sights in mind not a scope. With a proper cheek weld my eyes are way too low to use a scope. So I'm using more of a chin weld instead of a cheek weld.

Definitely report back after the range. Sucks if its a low cheek weld. You can get a slip on that raises the height. If its too low I may look into that.

Could you recommend a decent scope and mounts ? 100 yards will be longest shot I would be taking

Called WalMart on east side of houma and she said they do have guns on clearance but that she can't sell any because the machine they use for the background checks is down and her manager has not done anything about it for months now

How much you looking to spend?
Vortex Crossfire 2. I believe the 3-9x40 (or 44 I forget) is about $130 on amazon. Talley rings I used on my 300 win mag holds up just fine. Those were $35. That's probably the setup I'm going to go with on this Ruger. May go with the 4-12 magnification.

Just a FYI for y'all - I picked up my Ruger 30.06 today at the location it was waiting at (delayed background check due to WM mistakes) and they had actually gotten in some more .22 savages and Ruger Americans on clearance this AM. No more 45-70 sightings though.

Dammit. I really need to save the money for my second AR build but I also want a deer rifle

Picked up a Savage .22 for $74.00 at Hammond Wal Mart. When I saw the price I couldn't pass it up based on the fact you can't buy a pellet gun for that price.

Did you happen to notice if they had any 17 wsm or 17 hmr on clearance in Hammond ?
Posted on 8/29/16 at 4:13 pm to LSUfreak1459
Between 150 or so. Thanks for the advice
