Ride the Bull begins next weekend, as everyone fights to catch that one big bull red. Anyone have any advice on uping my chances?? The tournament is a kayak tournament out of Caminada Pass in Grand Isle, caught some the day before the tournament last year, but no success on tournament day. We used premade rigs with an ounce weight. Any suggest using a heavier weight with maybe a clear 80lb flouro leader?

Seems like it's pretty much just a fish lottery. I'm doing it for the first time this year and have zero expectations other than to just sit around and hang out for a day.

You may want to edit your title. (it's too short) They may whack your post although I haven't seen an admin around here in a while.

If I were to do it again, I would make sure I had a good anchor, a radio and a shite load of beer. Anchor on the outer limits and watch the show.

What did you have vs what do you suggest? I might borrow an anchor off my dad's bay boat and about 50' of line. Overkill? My 4lb claw anchor couldn't hold me in the surf at Elmers a few weeks ago.

You're not kidding. 1,000 + tub toys in one spot is madness.

I had a bruce anchor set up for break away. It is only 4.4lbs and held me just fine.

Bruce Anchor

Personally, I would bring more line than that. You will be able to anchor most places but not everywhere with 50'.

At this point about the only reason I'm still doing it is I've already paid my $75 plus my spot at the state park. I'll be there Tue-Sunday so hopefully I can get on some fish during the week.

ETA: I might even make the trip to PAC Thursday just to fish somewhere different.

I'm going to PAC Saturday. And either there or Delacroix/Reggio Sunday. Should be a quiet weekend for me

I'll grab something like that then plus extra line.

I've always wondered if all the people prefishing the week before makes fish shy the weekend of the tournament. You always hear people talk about catching a ton of fish the week of, then magically tournament day is a disappointment.

It worked well for me. Some people say that you need a chain. I didn't use one and had no problem staying put. I would rig it up break away though, people said that there is a lot of shite in the pass that can hang you up.

I would maybe make up a few rigs with multiple drops on them. Probably won't help your chances, but it would make me feel better. Also, if you use cut bait, be prepared to be taking off catfish all damn day.

Was thinking about using live crab, or cracked crab. I'll have my traps so getting crabs shouldn't be an issue (*insert Arties jokes).

Seriously though I'm just going out there to soak some bait, drink some beers and eat some lunchables. Like I said, expectations are low.

The only time I did it, it rained all day. Which at least kept it cool. Although I would constantly lose sight of my fishing partner between rollers it was more of "ride the waves" than "ride the bull" lol. Although my team did place
