I'm about to order everything I need to start building my own fishing rods. Does anyone else here do this?

I don't but my father in law does. Here is some pics of the last one he made me for a Christmas present.

That's sweet, I especially like the swirls on the blank.

I haven't done it fo 10 yrs. Be patient and prepared to redo a few wraps until u get it right. U can make some nice rods at a half price of a quality rod.

Where are you ordering your supplies from? Mudhole?

Yep, I'm planning on ordering everything from Mudhole. I'm not that interested in fancy looking rods. I'd rather keep it simple and not use a lot of wraps and different color threads.

To be honest. I don't know what brand blank it is. It is a medium light 7ft spinning.
I know it doesn't take much to spend a whole lot on a rod. Just getting some of the nice guides can really drive the price up.
I wouldn't even try building one myself. It's way too time consuming and very meticulous work. It makes for a good hobby if you are patient and into that sort of thing.

I haven't built rods but did enjoy tying flies for a few years, so I am betting I would enjoy building rods too...one day I will give it a try...

I've made many but haven't in a few years. I bought a rod dryer that made a world of difference when applying the wrap finish. A really good rod building jig makes things much easier as well.
Also, I prefer just inexpensive fuji reel seats.

I built a few, but it has been a bunch of years from the last one I did.
I still have my rod dryer/turner. It's a must.

I've always wanted to do this, but never had a good shop/place to build one. I'm very interested to see how your build goes.

All of my offshore rods are hand made by my uncle and his uncle. All of them from 1974 to 1995. Beautiful thread work near the butt/handle on every one of them.

Here is another that he did for me.

It's not as cheap as it once was. As long as you go into it knowing it is a hobby you'll enjoy it. Parts and blank prices have sky-rocketed the last few years making it more economical to just buy new rods. I rarely build any new ones these days, but enjoy re-wrapping the guides and changing out handles of my rods when time allows.
If you are going to build one, be sure to buy parts that will last so you can just "maintenance" instead of replace. Like others have said a good rod wrapper/dryer makes things so much better. I started with a couple V-Shaped 2x10's and a disco ball motor as my dryer (about $15).

looks like the same blank brand. same swirls. I would like to know what brand it is if you could look on them.

I'll find out for the LSU blank.
The marbling effect can be done with any rod. The second blue one is actually a refurbished rod. He found it during the storm debris after Katrina. Stripped it down and built the rod back just keeping the original blank. Gave it to me for to use for snapper or bull reds.

The swirls are likely made from dying the epoxy and using a toothpick or sharp object to create the pattern while it is still wet. The "Testers Enamel" paint you can get from Hobby Lobby will dye the epoxy any color you may want it without messing with integrity.
ETA: Look into a "Tiger Wrap" for the butt for a really cool effect.
